About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Together they’ll restore a broken kingdom or burn it to the ground . . .
In a kingdom long divided, Lyra Bien intends to live a quiet life to avoid the attention of magic-obsessed King Damir.
Until Roark Ashwood, the monarch’s silent but irresistibly handsome soldier, invades her village and uncovers Lyra’s secret.
That she is a melder . . .
Gifted in the three magical crafts – bone, blood and soul – a melder is highly sought after. But there is a price: their magic is also the seed of their destruction.
Forced to reveal her ability, Lyra is immediately claimed by Roark for the king, to be his next melder.
Now the captive of this brooding soldier, she must find a way to escape. But could Roark himself be the key to her freedom?
What neither of them realises, is that a dangerous truth lies beneath everything.
Together they will have to choose to stand against all they know – or face a darker destiny . . .
Not a great deal of spice if that’s what you’re looking for, but I think the relationship building was great between the 2 main characters!
If you love Vikings this one is for you, I do really like how Roark cannot speak and uses sign language that’s something I haven’t come across before which I thought was a nice element.
Overall it was a great book and will keep on listening to the others!
Really worth the listen!

Incredible magic system

The Viking lore that was entwined into this new world was also done so well!
The characters and their connections, like all of LJ’s previous books was also stunning.
That ending has blown my mind as well. It’s going to take me some time to digest it!
There is a lot of world building info included here. What it brings is brilliant, but be prepared it is there.
What an epic start to this new series!

I LOVE how this book is not just inclusive (with LGBTQ+ representation and the strong heroic male lead being a PWD) but his disability is not presented as something to overcome, it's not the focus of his story, it just is, but she also doesn't shy away from showing the added challenges and prejudice he experiences living in a world not built for him. Actually, correction, his disability is used to drive the plot forward, the romance plot, by making the use of sign language into the catalyst for some of the most intimate, swoony scenes I've ever read. Honestly, he's got good words to begin with ("burn it all, as long as you live") but the signing aspect added a physical intimacy to the act of communication between the couple that stole my breath.
If LJ doesn't have lived experience or a loved one with a hearing impairment or disability of some sort I'd be shocked. It's rare to see this kind of innate understanding in someone without it.
.... now to get through the next however many months / years (please please please don't let it be years) waiting for book 2.
Oh and the narrators both gave wonderful performances, they really embodied the characters and their voices complemented each other, I wasn't dragged out of the world when they switched. Maybe now that LJ has been picked up by the big gun publishers the budget might stretch to duet for the next instalment???? that would be awesome.
Finished it in a day...
Sign language is hot, and I really like the strong and silent type, emphasis on silent

DNF because the female voice actor is too irritating
