About this listen

Help!

I've inherited my aunt's historic house in small-town Oregon, and I need to fix it up and sell it fast before I move on to my big-city dreams. I'm one of the navy's best investigators, but twenty years of living in base housing means DIY isn't part of my extensive skill set.

Luckily, my best friend has the solution: his twenty-three-year-old son. Knox recently graduated from college, needs a room for the summer, and comes with a giant cat and years of remodeling experience.

Not only is Knox all grown up and hot as sin, but I recognize him. He's the bossy, bearded guy I shared the hottest kiss of my life with. No way can my buddy find out I've got it bad for his son. But with all the stripping, hammering, and drilling, my defenses crumble one dance break at a time.

As our sexy secret summer fling continues, Knox also proves himself handy at fixing my grumpy mood and wounded heart. Now I can't imagine a future without him. I can solve any problem the navy throws at me, but I have no clue what to do about loving Knox or the damage this could do to my decades-long friendship.

Can we build a forever together, or are we destined to go our separate ways?

Contains mature themes.

41 yo Monroe has retired from the Navy and returned to his small hometown of Oregon. He flirts heavily with a cute young guy at a bachelor’s party only to find out the guy is his best friend’s son—the person he has agreed to host over the summer in the house he has just inherited. This won’t be awkward at all! 23 yo Knox has recently graduated college and he’s keen to use his remodelling experience to help Monroe. He’s also keen to continue where he and Monroe left off at the party. Both men know that they will be judged, especially by Knox’s father, but they just can’t seem to fight fate.

I liked the premise of this dad’s best friend / small-town / close-proximity romance, but I wavered about the execution. Sometimes you just want an easy read and this is certainly that. Both men act maturely, they communicate when they need to, and they’re mindful of other people’s feelings. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always keep my interest and this felt bland most of the time. I did like the cold case that Monroe was working on and more on that would have kept my interest. I also am allergic to overly sentimental love language and there’s plenty of that here—it just doesn’t ring true about the way guys actually talk to each other. 🎧 Voice actor David Lee Garver (as Monroe) had such a slow voice I had to speed up the playback to 1.2x speed. Lance West (as Knox) kept my attention more. Speeding things up worked well for both voices.

Sweet but veered towards bland & challenging!
