Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award and now a major film.

When paramedic Bruce Pike is called out to deal with another teenage adventure gone wrong, he knows better than his colleague, better than the kid's parents, what happened and how. Thirty years before, that dead boy could have been him. A relentlessly gripping and deeply moving novel about the damage you do to yourself when you're young and think you're immortal.

Critic Reviews

"An absorbing, powerful and deeply beautiful novel, a meditation on surfing which becomes a rumination about the very stuff of existence." (The Observer)

"This brilliant book may well turn out to be the finest thing that Winton has done." (Sydney Morning Herald)

"It's unlikely Winton has ever written as well as he writes in Breath.... Its seeming simplicity is deceptive, for beneath its pared-back surfaces lies all the steel of a major novelist operating at full throttle in a territory he has spent 25 years making his own." (The Age)

Incredible story

This is my first Tim Winton book and as a lover of the ocean, water and the story’s of peoples lives this book ticks all of those boxes!

Jury is out

Not really sure if I enjoyed this. The story sort of meandered to an uncertain end.

High expectations

A well written book with a definite slant towards the surfing culture. Boring in parts. The most irritating thing about this book is the somewhat overdone Aussie 'laid-backness' of the narrator.

Bad actor ruins Winton’s indelible prose

I am sorry but if the voice actor has the effect on others - as happened to me - of making one dread listening to this story, then you really have to wonder if the Australian Audible team know what they’re doing. Winton’s tender story about Pikelet and Loony was flattened and dulled at every turn. The VO was like a dreadful experiment and brought back reminders of that other dreadful experiment: the free Vox Libre recordings. Audible - please don’t ruin great writer’s work with this kind of carelessness. My advice? Just read the book instead. You won’t be disappointed.

The salt of WA

Been a long time since I read aTim Winton, and he didn't disappoint, except when it ended, only half way through my walk! Caught up in memories, The Point, sand, wax & boards, grommets out surfing a break with the big boys, who cared and brought them in safely. The nuances and hints of danger, ambiguity, stark reality draws one into the very essence of all that is so down right aussie. Left with that sickening sense of feeling very homesick for WA, you are left with a myriad of reminders of those men you've known, in one Breath he had painted them all. While the sound of the surf lingers on in your dreams., Tim brings it all home, a complete and satisfying circle. Brilliantly read byTroy Planet. Will remain a firm favorite this book, one to return to often, just to feel the grit and sand.....of achievement.

A wonderful story.

Loved it! Breath has hidden depth into the human psyche. It's artfully woven. I want to keep listening. I loved the language and the colour of the description; i felt i was riding each wave. Thank you for taking me surfing, it was a real journey that I wont forget.

Disappointing

This was my first Tim Winton book. Thought I would listen to the book as was thinking of going to the movie.
For me the story was disjointed without any real purpose or direction. As I haven’t read any of Tim’s other books not sure if all his books are as depressing. For me the story never really began had no middle and just seemed to suddenly end.
