I wish I’d known the tall, gruff, intimidating stranger I’m trapped in an elevator with in the dark would end up being my soon to be billionaire boss before I told him off...

After my good for nothing cousin stole my boyfriend (who was my boss), and I found myself without a home or a job, I swore off men for the rest of my life. I’m way too jaded to fall for another smooth talker in a bespoke suit…But then, I get trapped in an elevator (in the dark) with one.

Mr. Sexy Voice decides to play 20 Questions. The rule follower in me is freaking out because I’m late for a job interview courtesy of this stupid elevator. Playing a silly get-to-know-you-better game is the last thing on my mind.

To shut up the man with a romance audiobook narrator voice who smells like Eau de Pheromone, I tell him off.

When the lights turn back on, I’m knocked on my behind. Mr. Sexy Voice is a demigod. Tall. Dressed like he holds the world in the palm of his hand. And those dreamy blue eyes could make any girl swoon. No human has the right to look this hot.

When we get rescued, I can’t get away from him fast enough. No way am I letting this charmer mess up with my head.

A few weeks later, I step into a life-changing meeting-slash-interview in Los Angeles, and I’m face to face with the man I thought I’d never see again. Beckett Christensen, aka Mr. Sexy Voice, is my new billionaire boss-slash-client. Turns out there are consequences to telling off the boss. Big consequences…

USA Today Bestselling Author Scarlett Avery brings you an unapologetically sexy workplace romance. In this addicting love story, a former badass rock star turned hotter than hell CEO, who never thought he’d give up his forever bachelor status, falls first and falls hard for a super smart nerd who’s afraid to believe in love, but who secretly yearns to find the one.

I picked this up expecting a fun billionaire romance and instead spent most of the book wondering why the heroine was falling for a walking HR complaint.
The male lead isn't attractive because he's confident, he's just controlling, entitled, and convinced his wealth makes his behaviour acceptable. Every time the story seemed to recognise one of his red flags, it immediately turned around and framed it as romantic.
The book heavily leans into the fantasy of the domineering alpha male, but for me it crossed the line from confident to exhausting. Rather than chemistry, I got power imbalance. Rather than banter, I got arrogance. Rather than romance, I got a man who seemed to believe being rich and possessive were personality traits.
The heroine deserved better than spending hundreds of pages validating a man whose emotional growth appeared to consist of becoming slightly less insufferable.
If "bossy billionaire" is your thing, you may love this. If you're looking for a hero who respects women as much as he enjoys controlling every room he enters, this may not be the book for you.
