As seen on the Emmy Award-winning TV show - Leah Remini - Scientology & the Aftermath

Nominated by Foreword Magazine as 2009 Book of the Year Award Finalist

Marc Headley provides an insider's view of life as a member of Scientology's "Sea Organization". Marc worked at Scientology's secret desert compound, which houses all Scientology management, for 15 years. The 500-acre property is located deep in the California desert. The local townspeople were told lectures and films were made there. But is that all that was happening? It is the location of a multi-million-dollar home for L. Ron Hubbard, built two decades after his death. It is the home of Scientology's current leader, David Miscavige.

So what really happens at the Int Base? Are the stories on the Internet true? How does Scientology conduct management of its day-to-day operations? Could stories of armed guards, weapons, staff beatings, and razor-wire fences be true? If so, how could a facility like this exist in modern-day America?

Hundreds of staff tried to escape over the years. Some succeeded but were never seen or heard of again; most failed. Why were people kept here? What really went on at the headquarters of Scientology? This is the story of what happened behind the Iron Curtain of Scientology.

"...the Scientology cult, is I guarantee you, a thousand times more bizarre than you could have ever imagined." (The John & Ken Show, KFI AM 640)

"Headley's book also provides stunning material that has rarely been collected in one place...a damning account of life working for Scientology leader David Miscavige at the secretive desert base...." (Tony Ortega, The Village Voice

"Marc Headley, a former insider at the church, has written a tell-all book, called Blown for Good, about his 15 years of work with Scientology. And folks...you can't handle the truth...." (The Frisky)

This book is great!

Blown for Good has been a famous title within the Scientology critic circles for years. Now I’ve finally read it I know why! It’s a great first person perspective of what it’s like from the inside of one of the most prestigious Scientology facilities, and it uncovers a whole lot of the abuse and terrible conditions that come up for the staff day to day. It also covers why its so hard to leave. Marc is a great story teller and I found myself glued listening for hours on end. Even after being a Scientology watcher for years and watching, reading and listening to countless hours of material, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Best of all it isn’t too dense and technical for newcomers to understand. It’s really excellent!

An amazing twist at the end

Wow this book was truly riveting insightful and sad. Sad as the effects of Scientology are so far ranging

Slow going

The end was interesting and emotional, but it was a hard slog to get to that point.

Easily the Best Scientology Book Out There

First things first, Marc isn’t a professional writer. Or a professional voice actor. And it’s unfair to expect that of him. So the pacing isn’t perfect and the reading isn’t going to win any Emmys. But a professional writer wouldn’t have had the life experience to recount such a screwed up, captivating set of events from working in what is basically a mini-North Korea for multiple decades. An hour or so in, and none of those initial perceived shortcomings mattered. I was hooked, it was impossible to put down, and in fact I didn’t for the 11-and-change hours it took to finish the day it came out

Anyone even vaguely interested in hearing about the inner workings of Scientology should give this a listen. Scientology tell-alls are an admittedly very narrow genre, but this is easily the top of that class

Author reads the book!

I love listening to a first hand account read by the author. If you have read about Scientology in the past, you'll enjoy this one! if you haven't, I'd recommend Going Clear or Inside Scientology to get some of the lingo, as that could be confusing to the untrained ear.

GO DEEP INSIDE THIS EVIL CULT + RECOMMENDATIONS

Marcs book is defiantly one of the very best out there as he takes you behind the doors and into the very heart of Scientology showing you all those details they try so very hard to keep hidden. It is guaranteed to shock, appall and leave you very angry that such a 'religion' is allowed to abuse so many people on mass shielded by the first amendment.

This book covers his life in the cult from the lowest positions to some of the highest giving him access to the leader David Miscavige, the dictator that rules over the cult as an emperor. The story he tells is what it's really like to work, day in and day out, in such a strange organization, from the lowliest laborer mucking out excrement in a Gold Base pond to what kind of luxuries the celebrities and high-ranking members enjoy. Tom Cruise amongst other celebs are exposed for their blinkered view of abuse and how they justify the subjugation of regular Scientologists to appalling abuses.

If you enjoy this do buy Leah Remini's book Troublemaker, also the book, Abuse at the Top by Amy Scobee. The reviews on this book are not the best as some complain about the narration, but is honestly not that bad, just check the sample. It is an important book as it goes to the very centre of the cult. Last but not least, Beyond Belief My Secret Life by Jenna Miscavige Hill, that is also a stunning book that is well worth a credit. If you enjoy Marc's book & want more check out the three listed here.

Even better the second time

Glad this is on Audible now. I read the printed version a while back, and Mr. Headley did a great job as the narrator.

Missing the most important chapter?

This is a great book and fascinating story. I bought this through Amazon and listen with Audible. My version is just plain missing the chapter where Marc is run off the road? It is skipped. Quite strange. Also I noticed that the chapter numbers do not align with chapter number you select.

Painful

I tried to finish this book. I definitely tried. This book was written like a combination of water cooler gossip and total bitch session. The author spent way too much time discussing the daily inns and outs of his life with Scientology. Only an idiot would stay in that organization under the circumstances he described. I would like to have known more about the cult organization, but I will have to find a different book. The narrator did a terrible job with the story and has such and irritating voice it took away from the already terrible story line.

Marc is a great storyteller!

The way Marc told his story pulled me in from the very beginning. I laughed and cried. Well, sobbed, really. I've listened to it many times. Marc is a great storyteller and I hope he keeps writing.

Wow.

I really loved that the offer narrated this book, it added so much depth and emotion to his accounts.

It’s almost beyond belief such things are happening. It takes real courage to relive it all to address such a destructive force as this, for lack of a better term, cult.

Kirstie Alley recommended reading a book

Recently Kirstie Alley appeared on the UK version of celebrity big brother. One of the housemates asked about Scientology and she said the best way to find out is to read a book. so I chose this one and A to Xenu by Chris Shelton.

Wowsers what a heart breaking account of a total lack of humanity within a so called religion. I am shocked this treatment is allowed to go on in America.

Much love to Marc and Claire who believed in each other and who's love has stood the test of time.

Excellent

Loved it. Marcs laid back approach to the Sea Org, what it meant to him as a child and the series of events that put him in a situation that scarred his life for good.
Mark puts no gloss on his time at Gold Base and at times his 'surfer dude' attitude to events going on around him are a refreshing take on previous CoS books I have listened too.
Excellent writing and relaxing narrative.
Good luck to the Headleys and their family and Kudos to Marc's father for never giving up on his son.

Extremely Important Information for everyone......

Excellent and very detailed on a daily basis, of an intelligent person who walked into a trap, then took the long game to walk out, and away from a prison disguised as a paradise, Scientology.

Excellent Book

This was a great listen and Marc is a very entertaining narrator. The story was good in that it wasn’t told to illicit sympathy but instead gave an insightful view into day to day life in the Sea Org and some reasoning ,no matter how incomprehensible , as to why a person puts up with it. I was very touched by the way Marc respects Claire’s privacy as her story is individual & unique and it’s up to her as to when, if & how she ever shares it. Hopefully they now have a long & happy life together.

Gripping and entertaining book

Very entertaining and easy to listen to despite the dark subject matter. The author has a great sense of humour which he uses effectively to highlight the absurdities within Scientology. I found his entire life story very gripping and finished the audiobook in only 2 days.

Mark is a fantastic storyteller and author

Another fascinating and insightful look at the corrupt practices of this brainwashing cult. I had to get used to Mark as a narrator, but his story is incredible and I am definitely now a big fan of the Headleys. Whether you are new to Scientology or like me, you have absorbed vast amounts of information, this book has a great deal to offer it's consumer. Just incredible.
