About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The first woman ever admitted to a prestigious order of mages unravels a secret conspiracy that could change the practice of magic forever in this standalone dark fantasy from the author of
The Sword of Kaigen.

For twenty years, Sciona has devoted every waking moment to the study of magic, fuelled by a mad desire to achieve the impossible: to be the first woman ever admitted to the High Magistry at the University of Magics and Industry.

When Sciona finally achieves her ambition and becomes a Highmage, she finds her challenges have just begun. Her new colleagues are determined to make her feel unwelcome – and instead of a qualified lab assistant they give her a janitor.

What neither Sciona nor her peers realize is that her taciturn assistant was not always a janitor. Ten years ago he was a nomadic hunter who lost his family on their perilous journey from the wild plains to the city. But now he sees the opportunity to finally understand the forces that decimated his tribe, drove him from his homeland – and keep the privileged in power.

At first, mage and outsider have a fractious relationship. But working together, they uncover an ancient secret that could change the course of magic forever – if it doesn’t get them killed first.

All of the emotions. WOW

This story hit me so hard. The most enraptured, horrified and devastated I’ve felt over a book since Sheri Tepper’s The Gate to Women’s Country. Such a bleak and disturbing reflection of our world, and the ending was a roller coaster of emotions and heartache. I’ll need some time to get over this one. Love love LOVE this book. M L Wang - you are brilliant <3

Heartbreaking and Hopeful Story. Thoughtful magic system. Beautifully Written

A strong bleak reflection of what horrors we chose to ignore for the sake of maintaining our beliefs and worldview. Timely understanding of what those in power will do to keep control, with a hopefulness that there are those brave enough to seek truth over comfort and people over exponential progress. Even though the path will be wrought with failures and confrontation, putting aside your ego to truely understand the world from another’s point of view leads to connections that run deepest.

I just absolutely loved every second of this. I feel it in my soul and I think it will take some time for me to get over it now that it's finished.

stronger feminist themes than plot

while I thoroughly enjoyed the character building and overall story, for a standalone. it was frequently over bearing on the feminism, sometimes droning on with it for most of the scene, or repeatedly using the same inner monologue a half dozen times. we get it the 4th time. it was fun until it really wasn't. I smiled a lot and was having a good time, then it did that thing again to ruin it and I'd have to put it down for the day.
I'd recommend it to my wife, but she's not into the vibe generally, and I'd ask her to try ignore it for the story because it's worth it
I think this is almost one of the best standalone fantasy novels, and the author is very talented nailing the consistency of the perspectives and understanding the distinction between that and the PoV, with minimal passive language and a lot of fun moments between characters.
on the fantasy side, the magic system is explored through the reader following the MC learning herself with is classic, but I really liked the twist it took that everyone else is pretty stupid. I would refer to the Dunning-Kruger effect but that would apply to our MCP too and breaks the fun element of it.
The overall world building is limited because the nature of a standalone demands it, it would have been nice to explore beyond the city and main plot incidents so if there was another standalone in this world I'd like to have a chance to revisit

Great book with unique magic

I liked that this book was unique on its magic system. I did think it lacked a little action but I did enjoy the ending.

Magically engineered world with big themes

Siona is the anaomaly in a magical, patriarchal society. How much is she a part of the problem?
Great work building and in depth magic system that will appeal to the mechanically minded.
