Critic Reviews

Harriet Tyce brings a new layer of visceral, addictive dark to domestic noir. Obsession, revenge, lust and murder play out on the pages as a female barrister tries to hold her life together while her personality tries to tear it apart. At once shocking and riveting, I simply couldn't stop reading. Bravo (Sarah Pinborough)
A classy thriller with complex and compelling characters (Clare Mackintosh)
A deeply flawed but relatable heroine who makes the mistakes we all dread making ... I devoured it with white knuckles. Vivid, deft storytelling that holds a knife to your throat all the way through and makes your blood curdle. Coruscating! (Veronica Henry)
So dark and compelling. It deserves to fly off the shelves. (Melanie McGrath)

kept me guessing till the wicked twist at the end. Asks of us ...do we really know anyone??? Reccommend!

a great suspence

What a fantastic book! Kept my attention throughout. Never saw that twist at the ending coming. The narrator did a fantastic job although I did agree with some of the feedback that the child's voice was way too whiney it did become a bit irritating but overall great narration. Brilliant read.

Did not see that ending coming!

Although it took a few chapters to really get going, once it did, WOW, Brilliant.

Alison is a barrister, a wife and a mother and is having an affair with her instructing solicitor. What can possibly go wrong?! I went into this not really having any expectations, but the pace is really well balanced and I ended up binging it right to the end. Definitely looking for more Harriet Tyce books now - this was a thoroughly enjoyable escapism, although I wasn't keen on the narrator - to me, she made Alison sound older than I imagined she would be, so it lost some stars there, but still really, really good!

Twisty and a little unexpected

Main character had no agency. I found it frustrating that she took no control over her situation, consistently being the portrayed as the victim of her circumstances but never being able to change them herself. The character was displayed as weak & under the control of two men who treated her terribly. The story was overall well written and had a great twist at the end but I felt consistently annoyed by the main character dependent on these two men.

Good story but alison has no agency
