Sara Linton, medical examiner in the small town of Heartsdale, is called out to an apparent suicide on the local college campus. The mutilated body provides little in the way of clues - and the college authorities are keen to avoid a scandal - but for Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, things don't add up. Story
Detective Sergeant Washington Poe is in court, fighting eviction from his beloved and isolated croft, when he is summoned to a backstreet brothel in Carlisle where a man has been beaten to death with a baseball bat. Poe is confused—he hunts serial killers and this appears to be a straightforward murder-by-pimp—but his attendance was requested personally, by the kind of people who prefer to remain in the shadows. As Poe and the socially awkward programmer Tilly Bradshaw delve deeper into the case, they are faced with seemingly unanswerable questions.

Publisher's Summary
The sleepy town of Heartsdale, Georgia, is jolted into panic when Sara Linton, paediatrician and medical examiner, finds Sibyl Adams dead in the local diner. As well as being viciously raped, Sibyl has been cut: two deep knife wounds form a lethal cross over her stomach. But it's only once Sara starts to perform the post-mortem that the full extent of the killer's brutality becomes clear. Police chief Jeffrey Tolliver - Sara's ex-husband - is in charge of the investigation, and when a second victim is found, crucified, only a few days later, both Jeffrey and Sara have to face the fact that Sibyl's murder wasn't a one-off attack. What they're dealing with is a seasoned sexual predator. A violent serial killer.

Great story! Suspenseful, Grafic and Gory. Love it
I loved how well written this story is. I did find it a little predictable. But it was very suspenseful, Grafic and kept my attention. The narrator was a little hard to get used to at first, but I blocked out the annoying tone and focused on the story and that got me through.

Not bad
The plot flows nicely, the story is enticing. It makes you want to read to find out what's going on. It's creepy and disgusting in places. The characters didn't grab me much though, didn't stick in my mind like they should have done. The narrator was good, get voice fitted well to the story. Overall a good impression though, I would be willing to read more of her books.

Predictable trashy thriller
Clearly written for a certain audience, one that doesn't like to think. This was recommended to me by a colleague but it was an error of judgement on their part.
I'm certainly not the target audience for this book. The characters follow such obvious stereotypes, the plot is thin, the characters one dimensional, its blindingly obvious who the killer is and full of cliché.
I wasn't aware until after reading the book of the authors personal life and opinions, but it makes sense as every male character in this book is either a druggie, a slacker, emotionally stunted, a pervert or simply just stupid whilst all the female characters are martyrs and heroines.
I'm sure people do enjoy this kind of writing, but if you enjoy an intelligent, thought provoking novel, steer clear of this.
The narration was awful too. Full of southern American drawl, the voices for the male characters were laughable, often reminding me of Lenny from Of Mice and Men, the redneck from the Simpsons and deputy dawg.
I shan't be reading anything further by this author.

Great introduction to the Grant County series
I really enjoyed this introduction to the characters in the Grant County series of books by Karin Slaughter.
The lovely southern drawl of the narrator suits the setting perfectly and the reader is gently eased in to the story then Sarah Linton discovers the first murder victim! This initial murder is gruesome and pretty explicit and leaves you reeling, I thought the story might suffer and have nowhere else to go but it continued to gather pace and had an equally pacy ending.
The small town atmosphere where everyone knows everyone else was captured very well, the characters have been introduced with enough detail to help this story along whilst leaving enough still to discover in subsequent books.
I look forward to discovering more.

Melodious narrator but grotesque crimes
I loved the narrator’s Southern Twang and the characters of Sarah and Geoffrey were well crafted. However, the brutal crime was so utterly repulsive that I had to switch off during the autopsy description. I don’t have the stomach for such depravity. I would have enjoyed this if the crimes had been a less grotesque, a little more Sunday-Murder-Club run of the mill killing. Shame

Not for the faint hearted!!
This was exciting and the characters were well developed. However, some repetitive phrases and predictable description meant it wasn’t 5 stars for me. It was also very graphic and was very descriptive about some difficult subject matter, one was left feeling that nothing was taboo and it could go anywhere. This didn’t bother me too much but it might upset/offend some readers.
I will continue with the series and hope that the writing improves as the author gains more experience.
