Story
Pete is a simple man who enjoys a good drink amongst good friends. Not too much to ask, right? Now, he's trapped in a fantasy world far from home, stuck underground and inside the body of a smelly dwarf with fantastic facial hair. The worst part? The swill that the dwarves are falling all over themselves to drink. It's flat, it's watery, and it has the alcohol content of a rancid coconut. Can Pete save the dwarves from their own sour fate, or will he be forever doomed to plink his pickaxe away in hopes that he hits the motherlode?

Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village #49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. It’s a priceless source of power for the Baron and the tyrant will kill to get it back. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions.

Improving LitRPG's by defying convention!
- By Samuel on 02-07-2021
Publisher's Summary
Damien nearly ended the world. Now, his mistake might be the only thing that can save it.
Good things come to those who wait. Damien Vale didn’t, and he ended up bound to an Eldritch creature from beyond the reaches of space. It has lived since the dawn of time, seen the world born and destroyed countless times, and wants to be called Henry.
Unusual companion or not, Damien was still determined to go to a mage college and study magic. He wants nothing more than to live normal life as a researcher, but if Henry’s true nature is revealed, he’ll be killed.
To top it all off, Damien’s teacher is a madman from the front lines of war, his alcoholic dean suspects something is awry with his companion, and Blackmist might possibly be the worst school in history. Damien has to prevent the end of the world, but he isn’t even sure he’s going to make it through Year One at Blackmist.
Blackmist is a slice-of-life mixed with LitRPG in a magic school setting. A slow-build power fantasy from Actus, the best-selling author of Morcster Chef. It's perfect for fans of Cradle, Iron Prince, and Mage Errant.

great magic school story with dark undertones
great in depth character building with plenty of mysteries to discover not my favourite narrator but that could just be my preference I feel for a coming of age story his voice just doesn't do characters justice but overall a great book I hope you continue this series as I'm kinda hooked now

A solid start to hopefully something more
I enjoyed this story greatly and practically all of its characters. The MC isn't dumb as a brick nor are they the next savant and it makes for a refreshing change for stories like this. The LITRPG elements were light but were there and as such is not as focused on the status as other such stories are as in this one the 'system' is entirely man made to be used in a school setting.
I highly recommend this book if you enjoy progression based stories or school based stories as its solidly written and narrated.

My only problem is that it's too short
I was gonna write an in-depth review of what I like, but honestly, I can't be bothered. It's great. If you like stories of magic schools, you'll like this. I am a little worried the author will abandon this. He has several on-going book series and this is easily my favorite of his.

Excellent I loved it!!!
I totally recommend this series. l wasn't sure it would suit my tastes as it revolves around a teen. But l was sucked in after listening for only a few chapters. The narrator is excellent in changing his voice so you know which character is talking. I've now got another author and narrator to add to my favourite list. You won't be sorry for getting this book. I'm looking forward to book 2.
