Publisher's Summary

After The Puppet Show, a new storm is coming....

Jared Keaton, chef to the stars. Charming. Charismatic. Psychopath....

He's currently serving a life sentence for the brutal murder of his daughter, Elizabeth. Her body was never found, and Keaton was convicted largely on the testimony of Detective Sergeant Washington Poe.

So when a young woman staggers into a remote police station with irrefutable evidence that she is Elizabeth Keaton, Poe finds himself on the wrong end of an investigation, one that could cost him much more than his career.

Helped by the only person he trusts, the brilliant but socially awkward Tilly Bradshaw, Poe races to answer the only question that matters: how can someone be both dead and alive at the same time?

And then Elizabeth goes missing again - and all paths of investigation lead back to Poe.

A Superb Police Procedural

I cannot praise this highly enough. Among the best that I have encountered in this genre. It is intricately plotted and well written with great characters.

Should be at least 6 stars!

I am desolate! I have listened to Black Summer and now it's over and I'll never get to hear it for the first time ever again. There is nothing to find fault with here. The writing is exquisite, masterful, eloquent and witty. The characters are so believable, so completely real that they are tangible. The narration by John Banks is exactly spot on, as if he had been born to narrate the book. 9 hours and 47 minutes of pure gold standard entertainment. Washington and Tilly are the best double act since Morecambe and Wise. The book was like nectar for my soul, the plot clever and enticing, weaving its disparate threads together into a stunning tapestry. I confess, I experienced multiple eargasms listening to this book. M W Craven has taken The Puppet Show, which I thought was perfect and couldn't be improved upon and created something even more spell binding. I cannot think of a book that has so captivated me in this way for a very long time. How long for book 3 I need to know? My heart is crying out for another journey with Poe and Bradshaw. Absolutely superb. If you listen to one book this year, make it Black Summer, you can thank me later.

A fantastic follow-up to The Puppet Show

I can’t remember getting through an audiobook so fast. I just couldn’t stop listening. A gripping story, great characters and an interesting location. And at the heart of it, the Poe/Tilly relationship which is so well depicted. Hats off too to the narrator, whose performance so suited the story and who got Tilly just right.

Well worth reading

I didn't quite enjoy this as much as the Puppet Show, but it's still a good read and well worth the credit. I am very fond of Tilly!

Brilliant!

Wow! Gripping, again, extremely well developed characters and complex storyline. Super narration with great expression. Can't wait for the next Poe story. Cumbria was brought to life very skillfully.

One of the best books I have read this year

After reading The Puppet Show twice and loving it I couldn’t wait to read this beauty. Just when I thought M.W. Craven couldn’t get any better, he did just that and has blown my brain! OMFG this book is mind blowing….I just didn’t want it to end! and that is no exaggeration.

I actually listened to this audio, seems to be my thing at the moment. But this story is so damn good I actually had to stop listening to it….Can you believe that?! then two days later I finally listened to the last hour.

A big shout out to the narrator John Banks I absolutely loved the way the story was told, the narrators voice just suits the story. If you know what I mean.

This book blows all the books I have read out of the water, and I am just so excited for you all to read it. From Brilliant characters to an epic plot. I guarantee that you wont be disappointed. I can’t wait for the next book. This is without a doubt the one of the best books I have read/listened to this year!

If your looking for a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat then this is the book for you. Which I cannot recommend enough giving it all the stars.
