About this listen

Two estranged sisters reunite to solve the harrowing mystery of their missing mother.

In 1998, the American Jorgenson family had been on a year-long road trip in Australia. One humid, storming night, the mother - Elsa Jorgenson - vanished in an isolated stretch of Australian everglades. Elsa was never seen again.

That night, twelve-year-old Lily Jorgenson was left alone and terrified in the family camper—even her teenage sister Iris is missing. When Iris comes racing back through the rain, she refuses to tell where she’s been. Lily is certain her sister is hiding a dark secret.

24 years later, Lily is a travel writer living a settled life with her son in Pennsylvania, USA. Lily and Iris are estranged, with Iris’s secret having torn them apart. When floods dredge up their mother’s backpack from the everglades, tantalising clues are uncovered, and the police reopen the cold case.

Lily returns to Australia, determined to force Iris to finally tell her secret, and to do that, she'll have to reunite with her. But when Lily unlocks the gut-wrenching events of the past, she finds that everything she thought was true about her family is about to shatter.

ANNI TAYLOR lives on The Central Coast, north of Sydney, Australia, with her partner and four boys. Her thriller novels include The Game You Played, Stranger in the Woods and Poison Orchids.

I have read Anni Taylor books before and loved them but this was my first audiobook of hers. Loved it! Great characters with layers of secrets, engaging narration that kept me hooked until the very end.

Captivating story from start to finish!

This was such a heartbreaking tale yet I couldn’t put it down. The characters were likeable and the author wrote well. It was refreshing to come across a crime mystery that had no plot holes. Everything was wrapped up nicely and I’ll admit whilst I usually guess the villain I would never have guessed this twist and it was done well.

The narrator also did a fantastic job with her voice over work distinguishing between the different characters made the book come to life. Would love to see this turned into a Netflix miniseries. First time discovering this author. Will read more books of hers now. Everything was worth 5 stars!!!

Excellent writing and narration. Captivating

Great story. Extra meaning since I've lived half my life in USA and half in Australia. Very believable characters that stayed true throughout. Only read a few Australian authors and this was outstanding - will definitely read more.

One nit, if I heard correctly; penguins waddle *out* of the water during the tourist parade, not into. Seen the parade more times than I can count, being within walking distance from my nan's holiday house. :)

Best book I’ve read in years

I haven’t enjoyed a book so much in years. I loved the exposed secrets and twists and turns, and revisiting places in Australia i visited years ago too. So well written! I can’t wait to read more of Annis works!
I usually listen to an audible book and read one on my kindle but I couldn’t read anything else until I’d finished this as nothing compared.
Thanks for the brilliant read Anni and best narration by Harriet Gordon-Anderson

Great storyline

Loved the story and how clear it is that things can be very different from what we can see. The strength and resourcefulness women have is astounding
