Publisher's Summary

From the hosts of hit podcast Call Your Girlfriend comes the bible on how to keep each other close.

You meet - and there's a spark. You want to know everything about each other. You spill your secrets, you spend all weekend together, you go on holiday. You fight and it's gut-wrenching. You see each other through the worst times and the best. You know each other better than parents, siblings, lovers. You stay in touch when miles apart. You will always be there.

This is the most important relationship of your life. This is your 'Big Friendship'.

A close, fulfilling friendship is the key to happiness - everyone from Greek philosophers to Instagram influencers will agree. But for all that, we don't talk enough about what it takes to nurture friendships for the long haul.

Telling the story of their own 10-year, complex, loving friendship, Aminatou and Ann share their hard-won wisdom with honesty, hilarity and compassion. They've weathered life-threatening health scares, long-distance living, racial tension, emergency counselling and one unfortunate Thanksgiving dinner eaten in a parking lot. And they know: the most important part of a 'Big Friendship' is making the investment in each other.

This is a bible to treasure and a gift to bestow - an inspiring and entertaining testament to the power of society's most underappreciated relationship, showing how it can survive anything and become a life-affirming bond.

This is the book everybody would want. It’s the big friendship guide everybody deserves. I don't know a better friendship story.

I am often skeptical of overly positive reviews but this book exceeded my every expectation. I laughed at friendship mishaps, reflected on what I had labelled ‘toxic’ friendships that I had let slip away, and cried over the aptly termed ‘dormant’ relationships in my life that are yet to heal. Once I purchased it I was unable to stop listening (stopping only to sleep briefly), and when I was done felt a renewed energy to reach out to the big friendships in my own life. It was the book I needed in these isolated and lonely times, stuck in a mandatory lockdown with my big friendships more than 1500km away. It was comforting in its unflinching honesty, but also didn’t shy away from discussing race and its importance in friendship dynamics which has prompted me to confront how much more work I need to do. I am a big fan of the podcast, but was even more inspired by this book. It smashes the unrealistic expectations I had been lead to believe about friendship (from observing public friendships via curated media) and reaffirmed experiences I had had but was unable to articulate. It makes me feel like I have a new perspective to approach some of these hard conversations. I feel so privileged to have found this book at this time of so much upheaval as it has given me the vocabulary to talk about friendship in a meaningful way.

an important read

I enjoyed this. as a fan of the podcast, I eagerly awaited it. As a woman in my late 40s, I'm happy this exists to normalize my friendship troubles. There seems to be a recognition lately of friendship (particularly female) as necessary...and affording it the care it so deserves. This had some low parts...some repetitive parts a and a few odd production choices...but the message was great, and I valued the candor. this i s 1 to give your girlfriends or book club... worth reading, then discussing amongst ourselves.
