Story
In 1844, two years before the Donner Party, the Stevens-Murphy company left Missouri to be the first wagons into California through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Mostly Irish Catholics, the party sought religious freedom and education in the mission-dominated land and enjoyed a safe journey - until October, when a heavy snowstorm forced difficult decisions. Interesting Mystery, Excellent Narration
As Xe Sands is one of my all time favorite narrators, I thought the narration was exceptional, of course. Her ability to give voices to different characters and to do male voices very well helps make her a favorite for me. Regarding the story, first and foremost, know this book is a Christian romance. There is NO mention of this in the book summary. Reading the Bible, praying, forgiveness, and faith are strong themes in the book. Well done for the genre. There is a mystery running throughout the book as well as the attraction/romance growing between Luke, the attractive Congressman, and Anna, the principled Librarian. It was a good story and for the most part, I enjoyed it. But, the frequent reference to their hard childhoods, sins committed against them, etc became a bit tedious for me. I am particularly sensitive to that. I personally read to escape the hardships of life. 😊

Can’t give enough stars!
Although it took a bit to get used to the narrators voice, i did and it was a very appropriate voice for the story! The book is one of the finest mixes of good humour, well defined, individual and fascinating characters, real history, beautiful but not over done romance, and a narrative that at times had me tense with suspense...my first book by this author. I can’t wait for more!

My favorite narrator; slow disappointing plot.
I love Xe Sands and book sounded interesting. It was laboriously slow and characters undeveloped. Interesting historical fiction made dull.
