Publisher's Summary

A riveting portrayal of female friendship, and the frayed boundary between loyalty and desire

Mari and Elisabeth have been at the center of each other's lives for years. Close friends since university, they're now drifting through their mid-twenties, working casual jobs and living in run-down share houses. When they meet Jack, a charming academic historian twenty years their senior, they're attracted to the sophisticated, intellectual world in which he seems to move.

As the summer gathers heat, Jack is drawn into their lives, and an unconventional relationship—halfway between friendship and love triangle—develops. But soon things grow more complicated, and as secrets and betrayals detonate, the fallout sets the course for the rest of their lives.

In Mari and Elisabeth, Joanna Horton has created two unforgettable women, whose choices on the cusp of adulthood will resonate with anyone who has ever had to navigate where friendship, intimacy and love intersect when trying to make a life of one's own.

Friendship, loyalty & the secrets we keep

Joanna Horton explores the complexities of friendship, loyalty, lust and desire in this brilliant novel about two women looking for meaning; and an older man looking for validation. While the author weaves philosophy, sociology and political debate throughout the narrative, her characters are the real focus of the novel. You’ll find yourself wondering which character is “good”, who is the most likeable and who is “the villain”. But ultimately, you’ll realise that Horton is masterfully showcasing the best, the worst and the questionable in all of us. Between You And Me is a wonderful celebration of gender fluidity and sexual freedom; of exploring social boundaries and surviving the risk-taking, emotionally tumultuous years of your 20’s and early 30’s. I honestly couldn’t stop listening……

Engaging story

This was an interesting and engaging story of friendship and it’s complexities. I was drawn in and engaged throughout. I found all the characters flawed which was sometimes hard as I wanted to like at least one of them! Narrated well, but jumps quickly so it can be hard to tell which characters perspective you are hearing at times.
