An essential guide for how to snap out of autopilot and become your own best advocate, with candid anecdotes and easy-to-adopt steps, from veteran HR specialist and popular podcast host Laurie Ruettimann

Chances are you've spent the past few months cooped up inside, buried under a relentless news cycle and work that never seems to switch off. Millions of us worldwide are overworked, exhausted, and trying our hardest - yet not getting the recognition we deserve. It’s time for a fix.

Top career coach and HR consultant Laurie Ruettimann knows firsthand that work can get a hell of a lot better. A decade ago, Ruettimann was uninspired, blaming others and herself for the unhappiness she felt. Until she had an epiphany: If she wanted a fulfilling existence, she couldn’t sit around and wait for change. She had to be her own leader. She had to truly take ahold of life - the good, the bad, and the downright ugly - in order to transform her future.

Today, as businesses prioritize their bottom line over employee satisfaction and workers become increasingly isolated, the need to safeguard your wellbeing is crucial. And though this sounds intimidating, it’s easier to do than you think. Through tactical advice on how to approach work in a smart and healthy manner, which includes knowing when to sign off for the day, doubling down on our capacity to learn, fixing those finances, and beating impostor syndrome once and for all, Ruettimann lays out the framework necessary to champion your interests and create a life you actually enjoy.

Packed with advice and stories of others who regained control of their lives, Betting on You is a game-changing must-listen for how to radically improve your day-to-day, working more effectively and enthusiastically starting now.

Real, raw, unapologetic look at corporate culture

Book #4 out of 40

I fell in love with Laurie when I saw her speak at Inbound (a marketing conference that was all virtual this year). She’s snarky, outspoken, and intelligent. I preordered her book as soon as she mentioned she had a book.

5 things about this book:
1. Laurie does the Chapter+Podcast format that I enjoyed in David Goggins’ book Can’t Hurt Me. I love how it provides more conversational context to each Chapter.
2. As someone who’s constantly in a state of work/life imbalance, I really appreciated her practical, applicable advice.
3. Laurie is real, raw, and unapologetic. She owns her experiences good and bad.
4. Putting life/career in perspective. Leaving work at work and recognizing what really matters in life. (IE, don’t lose sleep over a typo in a report)
5. She promotes learning as a tactic for burnout. Learning new things gives me a boost when I’m feeling stagnant.

I stole this line from her book website:
Packed with advice and stories of others who regained control of their lives, Betting on You is a game-changing must-read for how to radically improve your day-to-day, working more effectively and enthusiastically starting now.

Says it all.

The truth shall set you free!

This was an interesting and honest look at HR, workplace culture and job satisfaction. It’s difficult to find someone that will speak the truth. I found it funny, refreshing and I had more than a few aha moments. Loved it and recommended to everyone I know - from everyone to those that love their jobs to the unemployed.

You Need This in Your Life - It’s Worth the Listen

Have you ever been stuck in your job, life, or what you find purpose in? Well then look no further than taking the journey with Laurie! While much of the direction and guidance Laurie provides in her book are mantras I have followed for years, it’s easy to lose sight of those through the every day hustle and bustle. Her guidance was a slap on the forehead and wake up call for me to get back in the lane that I had been veering out of to get my purpose back. What do I want out of life, work, relationships, and more is what this book truly allows you to explore. And added in are some funny, yet insightful stories that keep you hooked.

I can tell you, I am glad I sought out the audio book because Laurie’s ability to take you on the journey directly (she narrates it) gives the dialogue and guidance that much more meaning. I just finished this book and I am already starting it again!!

Thanks for this great resource, Laurie!!

Valuable & Refreshing HR Perspective

Many times, I thought or said “Wow” out loud, either because it wasn’t at all what I expected to hear or it was just extremely relatable. Laurie is down to earth with her human and professional experiences which gained her a great amount of wisdom. I found her HR industry and life coaching advice inspiring and helpful. As an HRCI cert pro, I recently heard her speak and was happy to find her book on Audible. I felt like I wanted to give her a high-five throughout and hope to hear her speak again.

Nailed it! Laurie always does

Laurie's passion for people and healthy work cultures resonates again and again through her work. I am thankful that my path intersected with her authenticity many years ago.

Betting On You will be a boom read by millions, and hundreds of thousands will finally get out of the rut they live in and start taking control to better their future.

Here's to a world of humans learning the impact of the statement, "Your work is not your worth."

Bravo, Laurie! Thank you for being one who encourages, inspires and believes in others. The world is a better place for all because of you.

Great advice and insights

When the author shared with the HR Community that she was writing a book, I added it to my list immediately. This author has been a podcast I have listened to and her insights are always spot on for me. What I got from this book was more than I expected. The content and no-nonsense to fixing yourself before you can fix your work world is not only relevant today, but so needed in the current pandemic.

Employees and employers alike need to understand that humanity can help push businesses forward. The roles and rules of traditional HR need to be filed away and we must create environments where honesty, respect and a desire to be — wait for it — human are more important than policies, procedures and protocol.

Laurie can always tell great stories, and the ones in this book will not disappoint. It is the lesson from the stories that are important to read, to digest and to implement if you feel work is broken. This book is one I wanted to read and didn’t know I needed to read until I finished it!
