Beitz trat frühzeitig für eine neue Ostpolitik und die Entschädigung der Zwangsarbeiter ein. Erst spät wurde bekannt, daß er während des II. Weltkriegs in Polen das Leben Hunderter verfolgter Juden rettete. Die israelische Holocaust-Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem ehrte ihn dafür als "Gerechter unter den Völkern".
