Publisher's Summary

When she arrived in New York on her 18th birthday, carrying nothing but $600 cash and a stolen camera, Alice Lee was looking for a fresh start. Now, just one month later, she is the city’s latest Jane Doe, an unidentified murder victim.

Ruby Jones is also trying to start over; she travelled halfway around the world only to find herself lonelier than ever. Until she finds Alice’s body by the Hudson River. From this first, devastating encounter, the two women form an unbreakable bond.

Alice is sure that Ruby is the key to solving the mystery of her life - and death. And Ruby - struggling to forget what she saw that morning - finds herself unable to let Alice go. Not until she is given the ending she deserves.

Before You Knew My Name doesn’t ask whodunnit. Instead, this powerful, hopeful novel asks: who was she? And what did she leave behind? The answers might surprise you.

Brilliant

Beautifully crafted. Clever. I listened over two days whilst painting a room, completely drawn in - like I was there, like the characters & places were real.
Didn’t want it to end… thought provoking. Perfect narration. Top of my favourite list.

Held My Attention Until End

Loved this novel. Many themes to be explored at our next book club meeting. Look forward to author’s next novel.

Tedious and boring

Heavy handed messaging wrapped up in subpar crime fiction. Also a ghost story. Don't waste your time.

Interesting

Started off a bit slow but definitely got into it quick. Good story. Recommend to read or listen too. Australian accent a bit much but easy to go over.

A graduation of Lovely Bones

At first I was reticent to read a depressing tale yet I became invested in the characters... parallel stories from different sides of the track. Interesting, insightful, philosophical... some beautiful prose. I'm pleased I continued as with the inevitable sad part coming, the way it was handled was respectful and intriguing as it was the conduit for a new direction for the story and the central characters.

Couldn't finish it

I thought this would be a good book but the story was extremely slow and didn't catch my attention. The narration was also lacking something and eventually I gave up.

Pluses and minuses

The characters were at first too cliched. Their lives seemed relentlessly depressing. Most of the male characters were portrayed in a negative light, all of them users. I was about to give up on the book when the death club was introduced. However, this lifted the narrative and made the book more interesting. It was certainly a different twist to the usual murder/mystery book. At times there were interesting discussions about the existential ‘death’ question. Towards the end some of the story ideas were too manipulated, like Ruby meeting up and having drinks with the murderer and then later going on a run before dawn into the danger fraught area of the park. That was annoying.
