About this listen

*Overcome any obstacle that life throws at you by cultivating an unbreakable mindset and learning to think like a Royal Marines Commando*

Historical recruitment campaigns to become a Royal Marines Commando drew on a harrowing but intriguing narrative: 99.9% Need Not Apply. In 2005, only one in a thousand applications for the Royal Marines were successful in reaching the end of training, earning the Coveted Green Beret - a world renowned symbol of excellence.

Becoming the 0.1% is the first-ever diary account of this training regime, charting the odds-stacked journey of Gareth Timmins, a 20-year-old recruit at the time, and providing a psychological framework for understanding how he was able to cultivate the mental strength and resilience needed to push through to success.

Each week of training is accompanied by lessons on his short-comings and growth to peak performance. It uses real-life and often terrifying experiences to describe to the reader the edge you need to cultivate a 0.1% mindset and succeed in life and work, by learning how to:

- Visualise achievements
- Combat fatigue and burnout
- Stay motivated by not losing sight of the end goal
- Eradicate complacency and achieve mastery
- Redefine expectation and regulate disappointment
- Live without convenience
- Thrive under pressure
- Break down self-imposed limitations
- Be held accountable to others

so much to take away from the book regardless of who you are and what you do. the book is not so much inspirational but full of insight into how you can be better, even changing the small things. many messages i convey to my teenage kids and look to adopt myself. highly recommend.

an awesome book

At first I was put off by the prospect of listening to hours of monotone drawl by the author, but fortunately an experienced speaker read the majority of the book, with the author highlighting key points.
This made this book far more enjoyable, and although personally I’ll never be able to relate to the super fit standards of an elite soldier, I learnt and identified with many other mindsets and mental challenges I have faced and overcome in my life’s journey.
Inspiring stuff.

Highly recommended 👍👍👍

Loved this book. The use of two voices was fantastic and helped keep place of what was happening.
For me, this was not a book of advice of how to become great, rather a story of one person's journey. Really enjoyed it.

Like how they changed up the gentlemen reading so that you knew which part had been written where. Also the lessons learnt along the way and example of how they can be useful in day-to-day life.

Loved, very inspiring

I found him relatable in many times throughout. Especially in our younger years. Had gone through similar training so found a few laughs and understood alot. One of the major take aways is that it's alot of mental resilience. You could be an athlete, off the charts in terms of you physical output. but poor mental resilience will only get you so far... Being surounded by like minded people is essential for growth. The author explores all these key points and more throughout. Train your mental health and look after it at all costs.

This is one of those reads that just keeps you on the hook. Witnessing Gareths journey and hearing about his personal experiences and the life lessons he has learned is absolutely surreal. Whilst I am no commando, his lessons apply so relevantly to those industries and people. Thankyou for sharing Gareth, you have given me the motivation I needed to keep continuing on my current path of adversity and never quit! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Absolutely inspiring

The format of two readers was interesting but worked well.
I found this an inspirational biography with good applications to daily life for those of us not undertaking military training.
