Publisher's Summary

From bestselling author Jackie French comes a book about the secrets we carry, those that we unearth—and those that are too dangerous to tell.

The once impoverished medical student Agnes Glock is now the fabulously wealthy Mrs Mulberry. Her estate in the mountains is magnificent, a haven for those too ravaged by the Great War to cope with the society that first condemned them to battle and which now shuns them.

The War has, however, stolen Agnes's chance to graduate as a doctor, as well as the fiance she adored. Her husband, Douglas Mulberry, remains shellshocked and unable to speak. Their scandalous marriage is a farce, an act of kindness to keep Douglas's fortune from his uncle's grasp.

A chance visit to a circus brings about a mystery in the form of a fairylike child whose guardians claim was brought up by dingoes. The child cannot speak and seems deformed. But Agnes is inexplicably drawn to her and believes she can be cured.

The decision to save the child will bring Agnes's lost fiance into her life again, as well as awaken the love of her husband who finds his voice as the three try to solve the mystery of the 'dingo girl'.

Agnes has put aside her own life and the dreams she once had. But now she has choices, with the main question the hardest: Who is Mrs Agnes Mulberry?

LoveJackie French as an author

Every book of Jackie French I have listened to leave me with more knowledge of the many sensitive areas that I hadn’t given thought to.e.g Of war injuries and how many soldiers were shunned because of their disfigurement.I encourage you to listen to becoming Mrs Mulberry and narration by Edwina Wren who was a narrator worth listening to

Excellent book

Jackie is a great Australian storyteller. She shines light on lesser known aspects of our history and the voices of people we don’t often get to hear from our past. Jackie writes evocatively about our relationship to the Australian landscape and the wildlife, helping us to rethink our connection to place, each other and our countries past. She helps us to understand our difficult past and to make a case for compassion.

I love Jackie French as an author....

....but geez, I wish it didn't take so damned long to get exciting.
Honestly, if I didn't know the style, I would surely not listen long enough.....but listen you must, even the 'boring' bits, because this is yet ANOTHER story that is sooooo well written, and soooo worth listening to.
So much so, that I find myself just staring off into space, enraptured in listening, rather than the multitasking I had intended through the 10 odd hours.
Great job yet again JF ♡♡♡

Beautiful story and performance

Another wonderful Jackie French novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it. But the poor lass who read it needed a sandwich- I could hear her tummy gurgling throughout 😂.

Couldn’t stop listening

So many stories in one. I love the way the reader captures so many different characters perfectly & how the author gives us a glimpse into a perspective of a time in history that is not often considered.

Jackie French does it again

The consummate author of all things Australian History with a knack for making you care for the fictional characters in very real settings - all meticulously researched. Great narrator too.

Narrator fabulous

The narrator was fabulous. But honestly I found the book tedious. I listened in the car and constantly found myself rolling my eyes at the main character with the ‘does he love me for real’ type of language… he literally just said he loved you lady, but sure you go ahead and ignore that and go on for a few more chapters to make sure.
The story itself was interesting and but very predictable - I still wanted to listen all the way through, it was a satisfying ending, but maybe this style of writing just isn’t for me.
