Er studierte Rechtswissenschaft, Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte und übersiedelte nach dem Studium nach München. Keyserling blieb zeitlebens unverheiratet. Sein schriftlicher Nachlass wurde, bis auf wenige Ausnahmen, auf seinen Wunsch hin vernichtet.
