About this listen

St. Ignatius, first-century Bishop of Antioch, called the “God-bearer”, is one of the earliest witnesses to the truth of Christ and the nature of the Christian life. Tradition tells us that as a small child, Ignatius was singled out by Jesus himself as an example of the childlike faith all Christians must possess (see Matthew 18:1-4). In Bearing God, Father Andrew Damick recounts the life of this great pastor, martyr, and saint, and interprets for the modern listener five major themes in the pastoral letters he wrote: martyrdom, salvation in Christ, the bishop, the unity of the Church, and the Eucharist.

I loved the way the narrative was woven together, using the Holy Tradition of the Orthodox Church to tie together the various works of St Ignatius through the saint’s life story. It is strongly focused on the Episcopate and Eucharist as the physical manifestations of the spiritual realities steeped in deep theology and ecclesiology, passed onto us through from Christ through the Apostles. Great book for starting the journey through early church history and early church fathers, before diving into the source material itself.

My own words feel cheap in trying to describe my introduction to the life of St Ignatius of Antioch. The small book presents an awe-inspiring account of St Ignatius’ teachings and life, lived in succession of Christ and the Apostles in his ministry and martyrdom. It is a deeply convincing presentation of a true successor of the apostles of Christ, reflecting the beauty of God and the beauty of his Mystical Body, the Church. Father Andrew is a compelling author and narrator, standing side-by-side with the reader, being humbled by the significance of St Ignatius and his message, which is one with the greatest message.
