Publisher's Summary

Her beginning may be our end....

Deep in the humid Mississippi bayou, a half-wild child is dragged from the murky waters. She has no memories and no family and is covered in mysterious markings. Adopted by the policeman who rescued her, Luce Boudreau follows him onto the force, determined to prove herself in the eyes of those who are still suspicious.

However, there's more of a battle ahead than Luce could possibly imagine. She may be an orphan without a past, but no one - including Luce herself - could ever be prepared for the truth of her dark, powerful destiny....

Critic Reviews

"The world building is fresh...The characters are well-drawn and easy to root for. And the romance really hits the spot." (Red Hot Books)

Worst Narrator Ever

In over 10 years on Audible and listening to hundreds of audiobooks, this is the worst narration I've ever heard. The story was decent enough - unique, funny, but the narration made it unbearable to listen to. I read other reviews about the narration, but I listened to the sample and didn't think it was that bad. Well, it got worse, much worse. The characters sounded like cartoons, and the screeching voices has me constantly turning my volume up and down. I'll read the next book, but won't purchase the audio.

Stunning and Unique

The storyline was captivating and the plot was unique. I loved it. The only detractor was the accents and voice of the Audible performer. They weren't genuine or well done, but instead an overexaggerated and disingenuous dialect that grated on my nerves quite frequently.

Screech!

The narrator screeched her way thru every male voice she tried to use. Her vocals literally hurt my ears, she seems to think she has to increase her volume while she screeches like a rusty hinge attempting to sound like a southern male. I finally had to give it up and read rather than listen. I enjoy Hailey Edwards's work, but will not listen to another book narrated by Laurence Bouvard. If the sample had highlighted her attempting a male persona I never would have purchased the book.

Terrible narration!

The narrator is awful, male and female voices! Have me a headache trying to listen. I have up about the fourth. Sux! Going to return it if possible.

Did not keep my attention.

I finished. more or less. some of the narration was chalk on a chalk board. childish cartoonie voices that i could not connect to. The story just missed. And that pretty much says it all.

Good 1st Installment

The narrator did a decent job, I was good with her female voices but wasn't the biggest fan of her male voices. This was an enjoyable 1st book in a series and I'm looking forward to the next book to see what will happen. You need to read in order as this storyline has a continuation arc.

#TeamLuce awaits!

I’m not new to Hailey Edwards books but this was a series I held off on. I wasn’t sure how I’d like it. I was surprised though. She opened up a whole new world that has you guessing from page to page to see what’s happening, what’s coming and who is doing it. This book is a little slow going on the beginning but with that said, the scene was set well. There is a helluva lot of layers to this one. So many people, creatures and chaos that it’s an on going train ride across crazy town. Luce finds herself in the middle of the tracks, a train full of bad people barreling for her and she only has two choices. Fight or be killed. It’s a right line at its best. I’m the end, she manages to come out with only a few new battle wounds. But, her life will never be the same. There is a new threat looming on the horizon waiting for her to make a mistake.

Great story

The narrator needs some work with male voices but it’s not enough of a distraction to give up on a really good story.

Is this narrator serious?

She did good.... until you get to the men narration. They all sound like 40 year old smokers trying to play a smoker. What the hell. Why why why I wanted to listen to it but how you supposed to picture a sexy man with a voice like that.

Great book - it has got me hooked!

Really enjoyed this book even though I wasn’t sure what to expect. It took a while to gain momentum but by the end I was thoroughly invested in the book. It has a genuinely unique feel to the world building and characters which is great as so many books out there are the same old thing. I also liked the fact that I had no idea what to expect so was completely open to being surprised. I’d definitely recommend just giving it a whirl as you can always return it if you aren’t happy with it. As a reference if you’re wondering whether this book is for you, I’ve also enjoyed the following series that fall into the paranormal/urban fantasy type genre.. -Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter -Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews -Imp series by Debra Dunbar -Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep -The Hollows series by Kim Harrison -The Others series by Anne Bishop -Crossbreed series by Dannika Dark -Boundary Magic series by Melissa F. Olson -Kara Gillian series by Diana Rowland -Arcana Chronicles series by Kresley Cole -Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost Love the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole too which has a lot of sexy time as a heads up in case you’re not a fan of that sort of stuff, but it is great and funny too and a very thorough world developed. Other ones that are good but more about relationships and sexy time than only focusing on the wider world, but still have a good story, include Pyte/Sentinel series by R.L. Mathewson, Seven series by Dannika Dark, Demonica series by Larissa Ione, New Species series by Laurann Dohner (not really a fan of Laurann’s other series though as they are too much porn and not enough story). Other series by these authors are also enjoyable. I apologise in advance for the many hours of your life you may now lose being thoroughly absorbed in series after series. Some I’ve not listened to for years but they’ve stuck in my memory, so apologies if my taste used to be worse than it is now that I’ve listened to over 1200 books. I may remember some with rose tinted glasses, but definitely enjoyed them at the time. Looking forward to more books from Hailey Edwards!
