Story
It is 1999 and Russia is on the edge of total implosion. Social and moral order has collapsed and what small semblance of control there is, is being imposed by mafia-like criminal gangs. While public opinion in the West is largely indifferent, the political analysts are less sanguine - Russian meltdown will make the disintegration of the Balkans look like the collapse of a cup-cake.

Story
A collection of five suspenseful gems by master storyteller Frederick Forsyth, best-selling author of The Day of the Jackal and The Odessa File. Justice does not always come easily, and it comes in many guises. On the seedier side of London, a shopkeeper witnesses a brutal beating in The Veteran. In a better neighborhood, a famous London auction house is scammed in The Art of the Matter. And there's more … the other stories venture to a persecution in 16th century Sienna, a mid-flight drug smuggling heist, and the lone survivor of Custer's Last Stand. The voices of narrators Patrick MacNee, Bruce Boxleitner, and Christopher Casanove truly compliments the author's genius. Mixing together the elements of great suspense - revenge, mystery, murder and deception - this collection is Forsyth at his best.

Kazablanka's review
My favourite Forsyth novel. Read it many years ago, and it was just as fascinating on this second run through. Meticulous back story in the first part, which I enjoyed the most. The action, in the second part, was possibly a bit over the top, but an enjoyable, satisfying conclusion. Great naration, as well.

FF does it again
Mr Forsyth has once again provided a wide-ranging, detailed narrative that takes the reader into the tunnels of Vietnam at the height of the conflict, across to Bosnia gripped in the brutality of it's civil conflict and then to South America. the hero is a laconic, highly disciplined ex soldier driven to use his special skills to bring international criminals to justice... not Batman, but the philosophical process is much the same. FF ensures that the reader is provided every detail, all the background, so that the imagery comes alive and the tension is very real. This rivals The Negotiator in scope and story, but the similarities are recognizable. Beautifully read and delivered.

Just a great storyteller.
Where does Avenger rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Pretty good read 7 out of 10. I hadn't read Forsyth's stuff for a while but have kicked off with this book and just realyl enjoyed it. Found myself engrossed in the story and would recommend it to anyone who likes this type of yarn.
What other book might you compare Avenger to, and why?
It has to be COBRA the follow up to AVENGER.
Have you listened to any of Eric Conger’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Not to my knowledge.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Great thriller.
Any additional comments?

Great Plot & Details
I enjoyed listening to this book and Forsyth rarely disappoints. Occasionally I wanted just a little less detail and backstory when some characters and situations were introduced, however, for others who are less familiar with the Vietnam and Yugoslav conflicts, it may be welcome. Eric Conger has a good voice and narrative rhythm, which for me is an absolute must for someone who'll be talking in your ear for many hours. In all he did an excellent job. I understand no one voice actor can do every accent, but Eric's South African was lamentable and his British wasn't great - I'm not sufficiently familiar with the various Yugoslav accents to comment on them so I won't. It's a shame the producers, or Eric himself, couldn't have taken the trouble to find out how to pronounce some foreign words, whose mispronunciation was irritating and avoidable. Schipol, the airport serving Amsterdam, is the one that sticks in my mind, but there were enough others for me to note it. I'm not expecting him to go 'full Dutch' on it, but if I can be bothered to look it up to check my pronunciation is correct, then someone getting well-paid to say it should too.
