Eigentlich möchte Lars mit seinem Drahtesel zunächst lediglich die australische Ostküste erradeln. Doch es sollte ihm wie Forrest Gump gehen, er konnte einfach nicht anhalten. Zu intensiv empfindet er das Freiheitsgefühl auf der Straße, zu sehr beeindruckt ihn die atemberaubende Natur, zu angenehm ist die Kumpelhaftigkeit der gastfreundlichen Australier.
So saß er auf der insgesamt 11-monatigen Tour über 1.500 Stunden im Sattel und legte insgesamt mehr als 20.000 Kilometer zurück, was eine lokale Zeitung später zu der vollmundigen Überschrift veranlasste: "Im Vergleich zur Australien-Tour von Lars Rekemeyer erscheint die Tour de France wie ein Volksradfahren in Ostfriesland."
