Christian Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863) wuchs als Sohn eines Maurers in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf. Eine weiterführende schulische Ausbildung blieb ihm verwehrt. Als Schreiber und Laufbursche bei einem Kirchspielvogt eignete sich der Autodidakt historisches und literarisches Wissen an. Der Versuch, als Schauspieler der Enge seines Geburtsortes zu entfliehen, scheiterte.
In dem hier als Hörbuch vorliegenden autobiographischen Text erzählt Hebbel auf humorvolle und nachdenkliche Art die Geschichte seiner keineswegs nur sonnigen Kindheit (ca. 1813-1820) im holsteinischen Wesselburen. Hugo von Hofmannsthal fand den Text so schön, dass er ihn in seine Anthologie "Deutsche Erzähler", erschienen im Insel Verlag, aufnahm.
