Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times and internationally best-selling authors of the Illuminae Files comes a new science fiction epic....

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the academy would touch....

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm

A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates

A smart-ass tech whiz with the galaxy's biggest chip on his shoulder

An alien warrior with anger-management issues

A tomboy pilot who's totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty's squad isn't even his biggest problem - that'd be Aurora Jie-Lin O'Malley, the girl he's just rescued from interdimensional space.

Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler's squad of losers, discipline cases, and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

NOBODY PANIC.

Critic Reviews

"This intergalactic space opera has it all: action, thrills, suspense, laughs, and all the feels." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

"Rotating perspectives and never-flagging energy propel this narrative forward, which, if it wasn't compelling enough on its own, is given illustrious life by its ragtag, always-at-odds cast." (Booklist, starred review)

A very 3-star book!

Breaking the fourth wall, I love books that do this. I had heard a lot about the book but didn't really know what to expect. What a horrifying premise and brilliant execution.

As it's a YA, there are so many cringe moments. Like, I'm not sure, Scarlet knows the difference between flirting and diplomacy. The cultures of non-humans were really confusing and not explained well, especially the Sildrathy.

I'm glad there are data entries as the narrative doesn't find a way to explain important parts of the world-building; in saying that, it feels like lazy writing.

Overall, I the book was and finished it really fast. I really want to read the next one, though.

Australian accents are some of the worst ive ever heard

(SPOILERS in the second half of review)

Amazing story! But I wish i had read it instead of listened, The person who voices Cat has a very abrupt Australian accent which is fine but the other narrators (excluding Scarlett) cannot do Australian accents to save their lives 😂 It kinda ruined the story for me! cant wait to read the second book and

SPOILER!!!

There wont be an Australian accent hopefully, I didnt LOVE cat buy that didnt mean i didnt cry my heart out, she had an amazing death scene but I just couldnt handle the accent 😭 ( im Australian by the way)

Great story

I’m usually not a fan of sci-fi, but this book/series was great. The tone is casual and funny, and the incongruent mix of characters work so well together.

I struggled very hard to finish this one

I will start by saying, the audible production of this was actually very great, my only issue was - being an Australian myself - the Americans trying to do Cat's Australian accent was like nails on a chalkboard oh my lord.
The story itself just was not for me, I had no attachment to any characters or desire to see where the story goes. I only finished it because I promised myself I wouldn't abandon anymore books this year.

Definitely YA

Ruined by some of the worst narration I've ever heard in an audiobook, especially the female reader, although the male reader is only marginally better. It has a decent enough story for a young adult audience, middle teens etc. I probably would have loved it at that age. It doesn't hold up as an adult fiction though, very heavy on the teenage angst and horny hormones.

Good but the teenage sexual obsession is too much.

I know this is "young adult" so they have over dramatized the sexual romance stuff... I just don't understand why they do that ? like are we honestly supposed to believe that young women do nothing but constantly fantasize about every guy with a cute smile and muscles ? maybe I'm too old and can't remember anymore but I don't remember being young being that obsessed with sexual desire...
take out the young adult stuff and there's an interesting story there with great world building.... the next potential big movie series even...
and yes the attempt at Australian accents were absolutely horrible.... like each voice performer did a completely different accent for cat (the Aussie) one sounding half British cockny.. one sounding Irish.. another sounding half south African.. like really? it was almost funny.
other than that stuff the story, characters and general world building is really good.

A touching adventure of galactic proportions

A beautifully written sci-fi adventure with plenty of heart. The authors do a fantastic job of making each of the ensemble characters feel unique and three-dimensional. The plot is gripping and powerful, and despite parts being a little bit predictable, it's a fantastic ride.

The narration is well-paced and engaging, despite the occasional over-exaggeration of an Australian accent.

If you like galactic adventures featuring aliens, advanced technology and a little bit of a supernatural element, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this series. Looking forward to the next one!

Awful attempted Australian accents

I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters. It was a creative world and I will definitely read the next book. For the most part the narration was quite good. However the many dismal attempts at an Australian accent by most of the narrators was jarringly bad!! Only two could pull it off... the Australian and the Brit. Every other attempt made me cringe and pulled me out of the narrative- it did not make for a smooth experience unfortunately.
