Lauretta Delevo, die Lorbeerblüte, wie sie die Bauern und Anrainer des Dorfes nennen, ist geboren. Sie war noch jung und so schön wie einer der stolzen Pinienbäume im Garten der Villa zur fröhlichen Frühlingszeit. Die einfachen Menschen des Tales hatten sich unbewusst vor ihr gebeugt, wenn sie ihr begegneten. Da kam Licht aus ihr, durchstrahlte jeden Dunkeln, der an ihr vorüber schritt, und oft geschah es, dass ihr ein süßes Gebet nachgemurmelt wurde, das eigentlich für die Madonna gedichtete war. Nun liegt sie da, noch in der Lage einer ruhig Schlafenden, nur etwas strenger die Glieder gestreckt und lebensferner das Angesicht.
