Publisher's Summary
An Officio Assassinorum story.
On the Knight World of Dominion, a Vindicare and a Callidus Assassin are tasked with eliminating a seditious leader and safely steering a pro-Imperial candidate to the throne.
Listen to it because....
Kingmaker shows the fascinating relationship between two very different temples of the Assassinorum, as two agents navigate the complex social hierarchy of a Knight World. The stakes are high and the pressure is on, for an Imperial war effort hinges on them executing their duty before disaster strikes.
The story:
The Officio Assassinorum safeguards the future of humanity. Its agents are the bloody-handed, secret saviours of the Imperium, killers charged with achieving the impossible...and Vindicare assassin Absolom Raithe has just been handed the most difficult assignment of his career.
The Knight World of Dominion is on the verge of seceding from the Imperium, its court riven by factionalism and ruled by an increasingly unhinged monarch. With the aid of the shapeshifting Callidus assassin Sycorax, Raithe must remove the king from his throne—and safely steer a pro-Imperial candidate to victory through the brutal succession crisis that will inevitably ensue. His team will need to infiltrate a world steeped in chivalric codes, where every move risks discovery and every threat pilots an adamantine monster...for if the assassins fail, and Dominion falls, the entire sector will be plunged into darkness.

Almost on the same level as Infinite and Divine
So when I found out Robert Rath was not only doing this, but had done several short stories featuring the Officio Assassinorum, I decided to go in on this. I read the short stories leading up to this that featured some of the characters in this book and I read it. It was great. I consider The Infinite and the Divine a tough act to follow, but this made it. I liked the featured assassins and how their different methods of killing clashed with one another as well as the fact that they had personalities and weren't just blank slates. The story takes several twists and turns until you realize this is more or less a heist movie where the goal is to kill someone and it has a couple Ocean's 11 level twists. I won't give them away because the surprise is what matters so I recommend checking it out for yourself.

A great spy novel
Three assassins have to work together to pull off an audacious mission, infiltrating a Knight world to instigate a succession and avert a secession, bringing the Knights of Dominion back into line with the Imperium. It's a brilliant setup and Rath delivers on that great premise with a story that mixes fantastic characters with espionage, action and intrigue, reading like a cross between a classic spy novel and a modern adventure thriller...with the oh-so-40k addition of enormous mechanical Knights. I loved all three assassins, and I hope there will be plenty more stories (both short stories - like the three which already exist - and further novels) in this series.

Fantastic Listen
this story really has it all. I'm a big fan of action, which it had plenty of and really well written action at that. but the story was shocking great as well. Robert Rath does a superb job flushing out all the assassins in here and show how each of the sects really work which was neat because we don't really see there point of view in to many books. Gareth Armstrong also kills it in all of his voices. highly recommend to any 40k, action, science fiction, mech fan

a great story from a fresh perspective
If you're no stranger to Warhammer 40k novels, you know the standard format. Big battles, Space Marines, Bombastic action.
This time however, we're approaching the standard problems from new angles and from differing schools of thought. Robert Rath's take on the imperial assassin's operatives, their thoughts, and social interplay, are really enjoyable. I wish that he'd been given more space and time to work with for this novel, but failing that, I certainly wouldn't argue with just more of these operatives period.

Stomping great story
Medieval sci-fi intrigue with a scattering of warhorns and knight combat. Honour and betrayal and some damn sharp shooting. Really enjoyed this.
The performance was stylistically different to what I'm used to but fitted the story excellently. Gareth Armstrong's performance made me think of both a medieval story teller and an agent making a report (which works so much better than it sounds!).
Very enjoyable all round.

Phenomenal highly recommended
Advice skipping of first chapter unless one wishes to receive 15 minutes of details of precise weapon capabilities of each Knight classes. but that should be the only thing you skip! It’s a thoroughly gripping story.
Performed superbly with each of the assassins voice is wonderfully vivid, both the writing and the audio performance makes each of them unique and intriguing.
Scenes of politicking and spying brilliantly intermingled with Knight on Knight action.
As with the infinite and the divine Rath, manages to make compelling characters and their interesting rivalry sizzle.

An Arthurian story combined with a spy thriller
If we look at the story beats on the imperial knight side of the story you'll soon see similarities with the older medieval stories, such as the various legends of Arthur and etc.
But that aside. it's a very good story, it has a lot of set ups which you don't notice until the reveals kick in, which are done excellently.
There's humour in the story, mostly in the form of the occasional clip. it is well placed and can definitely cause a grin and a laugh.
I personally really enjoy how they showed the assassinorum temples. It's also quite nice to see one of the minor temples, which makes sense, can't really work with Culexus, and even Khornates berserkers are more cooperative than Eversor.
Anyway, in short it is an excellent book both for imperial knights and the officio assassinorum.
definitely putting this very high up in my listened list.

The Vindicare temple have really cool operatives. Big fan of them since dawn of war. So interesting to have a more in-depth look how they work and also how some other assassin temples work. Amazing voice actor, great story, knights are so cool!
Really enjoyed this book!
