One wedding, two best men, one hell of a love story!

Declan Ramsay's brother Oliver was marrying Annabelle Aiken at a fairytale castle on the banks of Loch Ness in Scotland. The bride and groom decided that Annabelle's gay younger brother would share the best man duties with Declan. Declan had never met the kid who was to be his joint best man. Sam Aiken was abroad, working as an interpreter and finishing his studies. He wouldn't meet Declan until a few days before the wedding, so the best men communicated and planned their speech by email for more than a year.

But on meeting Sam Aiken, Declan is surprised to realize the kid isn't a kid at all, but a tall, blond, and athletic young man. Irascibly dour Scotsman Declan Ramsey has enjoyed getting to know Sam Aiken by email over the last year as they perform their joint best-man duties for Declan’s brother who is marrying Sam’s sister. The two finally meet on the way to the wedding and it doesn’t go well face-to-face at first but over time Sam’s sunny nature wins Declan over. Declan has always felt something missing in his relationships with women and he finally finds it when he starts a sexual relationship with Sam. While the wedding goes smoothly, Sam’s demanding father makes life difficult for Sam and Declan is unsure what hold Sam’s father has over him.

I enjoyed this a lot but, being the first in the Shatterproof Bond series, lots of things are left unanswered and the ending is HFN rather than HEA. Declan and Sam are both well-drawn characters with loads of chemistry and it was a pleasure to spend time with them. I also loved the sneaking around as they tried to keep their relationship secret. I think the series will get darker from here and I’m so looking forward to the rollercoaster journey! 🎧 UK voice artist Gary Furlong is a superb narrator and I absolutely loved his performance here!
