Publisher's Summary

The award-winning TV adventurer and travel writer's enthralling account of his 5,000-mile expedition around the Arabian Peninsula, from Iraq to Lebanon.

Following in the footsteps of great explorers such as Lawrence of Arabia and Wilfred Thesiger, Arabia is Levison Wood's account of his most complex expedition yet: circumnavigating the Arabian Peninsula. Travelling through some of the harshest and most beautiful environments on earth, he seeks to challenge our perceptions of an often misunderstood part of the world, seeing how the region has changed and examining the stories we don't often hear about in the media.

An audio documentary

Some books are just meant to be audiobooks, and this is one of them. Listening to the book felt as though I were listening to a documentary - having the actual adventurer / author read the story made it all the more better. It’s easy to drift off and feel as though the narrator is simply sat beside you, telling you all about his travels.

The story had the perfect mix of adventure, education and personality - all seamlessly intertwined together to create a seriously compelling narrative.

Absolutely recommend this book.

Fascinating listen

I love listening to Lev’s adventures. It’s good to see parts of the world I know I’ll never make it to through the eyes of such a knowledgeable, eloquent and compassionate soul. Some of his experiences will make you laugh others will move you to tears. Scrapes involving all manor of dodgy characters kept me holding my breath. He must have nerves of steel. For the most part this book is very informative I have learnt more about the troubled Middle East here than in a life time of news reports and documentaries. As someone that has more than a passing interest in antiquity this book was perfect. Lev visits and describes ancient cities, monuments etc in great detail. Looking forward to the his next trip.

seems a bit short tempered at times , and weary

enjoyed it in a few sittings and seems Levinson is bored of travelling and the characters that cone with it in war torn areas

Don’t believe all your read

This book is for anyone who has an interest in the Middle East, the real Middle East, and not necessarily everything you might hear, see or read.

I work in Jordan and recognise so much of the what Levison talks about, he has hit the nail on the head when describing the complexity of the region but also the simplicity of life for the average person.

This story has made me realise that being here in Jordan is such a fantastic opportunity and I have plans to visit Oman, Bethlehem and possibly Lebanon.

Well worth a listen.

Levison lives dangerously

Levison seems to enjoy going to places not on the usual holiday package route. As an ex soldier he seems to feel quite at home in war zones. This book gives an interesting perspective on an area hardly ever out of the news. Levison is good at giving an account of the people he meets, and his surroundings. Worth it, although I missed having any photographs.

Captivating!

Jeez Lev, you used some of your nine lives on this trip! Superb story! Makes one want to explore, but be grateful for what you have in the present too.

decent

Engaging, candid but just surface skimming for some parts in my opinion. Not as much depth as I would have hoped for but the schedule has to be tight so perhaps its good enough.

Fantastic travelog of modern day Arabia

Excellent modern travelog around Middle East, with nods to the classics of Thesiger and Burton. This is more than retreading Arabian Sands though, it gives a clear view of the current state of Yemen, Syria and others. Planning trip to Oman and Lebanon after this. Well read by Levison himself, thoroughly recommended

Excellent!

A great read prior to the tv series later this year. Levison is fantastic at retelling his story.
A must listen
