Nachdem sich König Ödipus in die Verbannung schicken ließ, entbrannte zwischen seinen Söhnen Eteokles und Polyneikes ein erbitterter Streit um das Königreich, der beide Brüder ebenfalls das Leben kostete. Daraufhin besteigt Antigones Onkel, König Kreon, den Thron. Den stets heimattreuen Eteokles lässt er würdevoll beisetzen, während die Überreste von Polyneikes den Tieren vorgeworfen werden. Ismene versucht ihre Schwester Antigone, beide Schwestern von Eteokles und Polyneikes, davon zu überzeugen, zu versuchen Kreon umzustimmen, dass Polyneikes würdig beigesetzt werden soll. Die unterwürfige Antigone lehnt dies zunächst ab. In Gottesfurcht beschließt sie jedoch eine würdige Beisetzung auf eigene Faust zu unternehmen. König Kreon erfährt davon und sperrt Antigone, die mit Kreons Sohn verlobt ist, in den Kerker. Ein Seher berichtet Kreon, dass sein Sohn bald sterben wird. Um dies zu verhindern, besinnt sich Kreon auf seine Gottesfurcht und beschließt Polyneikes eine würdige Beerdigung zukommen zu lassen und Antigone wieder freizulassen. Sein Entschluss kommt jedoch zu spät: Antigone und Kreons Sohn haben den Freitod gesucht.
