About this listen

They lied to protect their country. He told the truth to save it. A gripping historical thriller from the bestselling author of Fatherland.

January 1895. On a freezing morning in the heart of Paris, an army officer, Georges Picquart, witnesses a convicted spy, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, being publicly humiliated in front of twenty thousand spectators baying ‘Death to the Jew!’ The officer is rewarded with promotion: Picquart is made the French army’s youngest colonel and put in command of ‘the Statistical Section’ - the shadowy intelligence unit that tracked down Dreyfus.

The spy, meanwhile, is given a punishment of medieval cruelty: Dreyfus is shipped off to a lifetime of solitary confinement on Devil’s Island - unable to speak to anyone, not even his guards, his case seems closed forever. But gradually Picquart comes to believe there is something rotten at the heart of the Statistical Section. When he discovers another German spy operating on French soil, his superiors are oddly reluctant to pursue it. Despite official warnings, Picquart persists, and soon the officer and the spy are in the same predicament...

Narrated by Picquart, An Officer and a Spy is a compelling recreation of a scandal that became the most famous miscarriage of justice in history. Compelling, too, are the echoes for our modern world: an intelligence agency gone rogue, justice corrupted in the name of national security, a newspaper witch hunt of a persecuted minority, and the age-old instinct of those in power to cover-up their crimes.

A fantastic novel delving into the history of a different time and world events. Sadly, the same prejudices exist today.

brilliant story

Robert Harris' Best Work...

Harris steers among the shoals of historical fiction adroitly. The reading brings humanity to a fascinating era and episode.

Great story, well read

A terrific story, well written and well read. All up, very well told and utterly absorbing. On top of that, the story is timely. In essence, it’s a story of fake news and competing narratives relevant to our current politics. Highly recommended.

First rate historical novel

It is hard to explain why this story is so compelling. As an historical event it is not about something so extraordinary . It is a very good listen.

great performance.

Robert Harris is my favourite author. He immerses his stories authentically in their time and makes history believable and understandable. I especially like the way he caught the attitudes of the men who lead the army; their ignorance and prejudices. The same weaknesses are very clear in our current political situation. Are we always to be in the clutches of these decision makers of our world?

Wonderful read.

A fantastic performance of an incredible story. The sad truth is that modern military organisations still operate in much the same way. Have we not learnt anything?

Amazing book and amazing performance.

I can't believe this is a true story. It captivated me from the start and had me searching the internet for details and images of the protagonists.
This book is well-written and performed. I will definitely be getting more by Robert Harris

Outstanding

Here is a very real sense of reality, not being hit with writers excessive embezzlement. There never could be “And they lived happily ever afterwards”. Pain and pleasure are there together, this is not a tale that will be forgotten easily, but pleasure in this glimpse of a soldier’s struggle not to fold, but persist, to do what we demand of a soldier, to fight. My hat is off in salute to core of this tale.

A calm portrayal of some of life’s harsh reality
