Publisher's Summary

A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.

But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.

As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence - and her grip on reality - called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

I usually enjoy Carol Wyer's work - but not now!

I have have had at least 6 goes at listening to this book and l have never got passed the beginning of Chapter 3. I feel like throwing the Tablet - it is the voice - no way can this person read. She has killed it dead for me to the point I simply cannot tolerate to listen at all My reaction is visceral.

Sorry Carol Wyer.

Looking Forward to more Kate Young.

Fortunately I purchased both the ebook and audiobook of this title. The story is compelling with many twists and turns. There are also a few surprises that will keep you guessing to the end. Carol Wyer wrote a great story and I'm anticipating more great mysteries in this Kate Young series. My only problem was with the audiobook. The narration was not good. The narrator read this story in clipped, choppy sentences and in a pitch that was grating. I don't know what went wrong, but this made it extremely difficult to listen to. I finally finished the story with the ebook only.

Sex, lies and revenge

DI Kate Young has been summoned back from a leave of absence to investigate the gruesome murder of a corporate executive, who was a friend of Superintendent Dickson. Kate is suffering from PTSD and having flashbacks to an awful day when a gunman massacred train riders but she is determined to get to the truth. The significance of the gouged eye of each victim is mind blowing! Did not see the ending coming and I’m looking forward to the next book.

Great book!

Great story with great characters! I almost wanted the killer to get away with murder. I know it’s wrong, but I felt the victims deserved it. When a book makes me almost root for the killer, you know it’s good. I can’t wait for the next DI Kate Young book!

Exciting new series

I have read all of this author’s books and I liked the idea of a new female lead. Kate Young has traumatic flashbacks to a mass shooting she responded to and has been on leave. Called back to work at the personal request of her Superintendent, she’s asked to form a team to investigate a grizzly murder. Kate’s trauma is revealed throughout the story and we suffer with her. The one murder leads to another and the team is faced with lots of suspects and motives.

The narration added to the story.

This was hard to put down. Lots going on here. A great beginning to a new series.

Dreadful narrator

The worst I have ever heard! I have over 500 audible books and all of Carol Wyer’s and this is by far the most awful narration.

Do not buy as you won’t be able to listen to her!

Had to switch off....awful narration

Have no idea if good story or reciting protagonist. Had to stop listening to awful narration and it made me dislike the detective. May try the book and read myself.

Narrator was extremely irritating !

Narrator was extremely irritating with her clipped tones and voice, however I kept going but wouldn’t chose another book with that narrator.

Poor narration

I really love this author and I have listened to all her books, so was excited to see her new book out but the narration is so clipped and staccato that it is impossible to listen to and all the characters sound permanently angry.
I'll try the kindle version of the book as I really want to read it, I hope they change the narrator for the next one.
