About this listen

A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on 7 years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

I really loved this book. I love military history but it gave me such a good understanding of the development of the USA and it made sense to where they are now.

I really enjoyed the narration and I truly believed the speaking parts of Ulysses S Grant and it made me put myself in his shoes Like no other book has done in a long time.

I got such a sense for one of the most important men in American history.

The only issue I had was being able to retain all of the names of the important players and whose side they were on. That’s more of an issue for me than it is of the way the book was written.

History brought alive

This biography was a total delight and a surprise. I did not expect to be so engrossed with Grant’s story. An exceptional work.

Enlightening and engaging

This is one of the best, if not the best, books about US Grant.I got to know more about Ulysses as a noble human being and president with his great initiatives for native indians!.

I think he is underrated and for me, a Jordanian living in Australia, one of the finest Americans who ever lived!

My favorite U.S Grant biography

I thoroughly enjoyed this detailed biography of U.S. Grant. It paints vividly a man’s traversing of several stages in US history with the nation on his shoulders. Recommend for people with military and political interests, history lovers and those partial to a good story.

Great Man, Great Story, Well Read.

This was a superb biography, the narration was excellent and it gave a real essence of the character of Grant. This book did not shy away from the controversies in Grants life such as his drinking and dismissal while at Fort Humboldt and Order #11 against jews. However this was placed in context with events of the time and as you proceeded through the book you really felt you truly understood the character of Ulysses S Grant and what he stood for. I found this to one of the best biographies I have read and certainly gave me a great understanding of that momentous period of history. I certainly learnt that U.S. Grant was the first civil rights President and on completion I felt a real admiration for the man. A great book, highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the Americal civil war and the period of reconstruction that followed.
