Bis die Familie Rau eines Tages das Nebenhaus kauft: Das kinderlose Ehepaar Bub entdeckt im kleinen Peter Rau einen Wahlverwandten. So zieht Emil den Jungen tief hinein in seinen Kosmos aus schwäbischer Gelehrsamkeit und gemäßigter Anarchie, in dessen Mittelpunkt der Romantiker Eduard Mörike steht. Einen Sommer lang kämpfen die beiden älteren Paare um das Wohl des verlassenen und verzweifelten Peter im Tumult der neuen Protestbewegung um Stuttgart 21.

Ein Stimmenspiel ist der Roman, ein höchst kunstvoll erstelltes Perspektivenkaleidoskop. Abwechselnd durch die Augen von Emil und Veronika, Carla und Mia rückt man Peter, der ehemals geradezu engelhaften Erlösergestalt, auf den leider ziemlich verpickelten Pelz.
