Quando all’improvviso il padre muore, la famiglia è costretta a trasferirsi altrove e viene ospitata da diversi parenti prima di stabilirsi definitivamente a Frasca. La ragazza, nel frattempo, diventa donna e all’inizio degli anni Cinquanta decide di intraprendere un misterioso e solitario viaggio al Nord. Al ritorno, il confronto con la madre sarà inevitabile, facendosi presto scontro drammatico e portando alla luce dinamiche complesse rimaste latenti troppo a lungo.
