Das Moos des Waldbodens war fahl und spröde geworden, und zwischen den Halmgerippen der Gräser sah man auf den grauen Erdboden. Neben den dürren Nadeln des Waldbodens lagen tote Ameisen und Käfer. Die Steine in den Betten der Bäche waren trocken und weiß wie Elfenbein. Wo dazwischen noch ein Tümplein stand, da starb darin eine Forelle oder ein anderes Tier des Wassers.
