Der Begriff "Dekadenz" stammt aus der Geschichtsphilosophie. In diesem Kontext im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert großräumig eingeführt und etabliert, assoziieren wir ihn traditionell mit dem Niedergang Roms und dem vorangehenden Sittenverfall. Wenn der Vertreter einer Partei unserer Tage im Zusammenhang mit einer Erhöhung der Grundsicherung von "spätrömischer Dekadenz" spricht, dann zeugt dies nicht nur vom inflationären Alltagsgebrauch des Begriffs "Dekadenz", sondern vor allem von der noch immer untrennbaren Verbindung des Wortes mit dem Verfall des römischen Weltreiches. Ähnliches gilt, wenn die Öffentlichkeit gierige Börsenmakler oder Arbeitslose, die den lieben langen Tag vor dem Flachbildschirm verbringen, als dekadent bezeichnet.
