Publisher's Summary

Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice

She will reign.

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer - the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it's never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy's dangerous soul magic.

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: He will help her prove she's fit to rule, if she will help him reclaim his stolen magic.

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder - and more peril - than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she will need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected - or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.

The Voice of Milhouse

Struggled with this one but did finish as the storyline was fun. The MC is whiney and naive. The love interests/sidekicks are immature. But the thing that got to me the most was the voices for the male characters... they all sounded like kids from The Simpsons. Hard to feel hot and spicy about the voice of Milhouse!

A predictable YA book, but stands out

This has typical tropes of a YA fantasy, but this one is full of adventure! The world is interesting and explained very well. The Magic system is unique but nothing mind-blowing, but still interesting enough to keep me going. The romance was good, kind of what you would get in a YA fantasy. Nothing too steamy; kind of wanted more development with some characters. The characters are predictable, very similar to what you'd read in YA.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, but again, it is filled with typical YA tropes and is predictable.

Engaging

A very entertaining read with fun characters and decent world building . Of course not everything is perfect but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Great performance by the narrator too!

Excellent read

Great story. I have never really enjoyed "fantasy" stories but this author is brilliant, I can't put down her books! The narrator wasn't the best, they really needed two narrators. If not for that it would be a 10 out of 10 for me.

Loved it!

Gotta love a strong female lead and her posse of strangers who all go on an adventure.

Loved it!! Her ferociousness was inspiring and also a little frightening

Want to finish, but can’t listen to the narrator any longer

The story is interesting but the narrator definitely isn’t a good match. It’s painful and cringy to listen to the dialogue, it’s as if you’re listing to a couple of 12 year olds acting out a play. I think the only way to finish this is to read it yourself.

3 1/2 stars really.

It was a good story, however, at the beginning I found the FMC a bit unlikeable, but I eventually came around. Loved the world Grace bought to life and the magic system. Narration is such a hard performance to nail and although they managed it well, I would have liked more variation of the male characters. Overall, a very decent listen.

Not the right narrator.

Unfortunately I found it really difficult to engage with this book. I found the narrator very tedious - her voices for males make them all sound like adolescent boys which doesn't align with the actual characters. The storyline would be interesting if there weren't so many unnecessary additives that pulled away from the core of the narrative.
