About this listen

From the award-winning author of Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland, perfect for fans of Don Winslow and Attica Locke.

A Black sheriff. A serial killer.

And a small town ready to combust.

Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, Charon has had only two murders. After years of working as an FBI agent, no one knows better than Titus that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface.

But a year to the day after Titus's election, a school teacher is killed by a former student. The student is then fatally shot by Titus's deputies.

As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes, and a serial killer who has been hiding in plain sight, haunting the dirt lanes and woodland clearings of Charon. With the killer's possible connections to a local church and the town's harrowing history weighing on him, Titus tries to project confidence about closing the case while concealing a painful secret from his own past. At the same time, he also has to contend with a far-right group that wants to hold a parade in celebration of the town's Confederate history.

Charon is Titus's home and his heart. But where faith and violence meet, there will be a reckoning.

takes hold straight away and follows through with decent fleshed out characters, setting and a dark history. Awesome narrator, definitely one I want to hear from again. keen to check it more from this author and narrator. if you like "true detective" especially season 1 then you'll love this, very similar vibe.

Excellent narration of an excellent book. I’ve liked the author’s other two books but this surpassed - this main character was a real!

Best of his books so far

Love these fully formed characters and a compelling plot that races along and keeps the reader guessing. Darkest subject matter handled with great care and caution. Loved it.

Propulsive, terrifying, gratifying: another Cosby hit.

Riveting. Brilliantly read. An insightful thriller with race, Americana, class and the Deep South contributing to a great serial killer story.

Now I need to read everything this author has touched

The story and the background of racism persisting in the modern US was eye opening. How could anyone live a life where there remains such hatred. The story itself was good but too many deaths and violence throughout. Well written and great character development.

Intense story and the racial divide

This is Sam Cosby’s best novel. It is based on character, dialogue and narrative with an essence that draws from deep in the soul of America, particularly the South. Cosby draws back the layers of an onion that is sadly rotten in its core. The brutal reality of racism, violence and physiological damage - as well as the nasty community attitudes exposed - tells a story that remains unresolved and will continue to stain the US until those wounds are uncovered and healed. A tour de force.

Cracking read from a master storyteller
