Publisher's Summary

Life is waiting to happen to Hubert Bird. But first he has to open his front door and let it in.

In weekly phone calls to his daughter in Australia, widower Hubert Bird paints a picture of the perfect retirement, packed with fun, friendship and fulfilment.

But Hubert Bird is lying.

The truth is day after day drags by without him seeing a single soul.

Until, that is, he receives some good news - good news that in one way turns out to be the worst news ever, news that will force him out again, into a world he has long since turned his back on.

Now, Hubert faces a seemingly impossible task: to make his real life resemble his fake life before the truth comes out.

Along the way Hubert stumbles across a second chance at love, renews a cherished friendship and finds himself roped into an audacious community scheme that seeks to end loneliness once and for all.

Life is certainly beginning to happen to Hubert Bird. But with the origin of his earlier isolation always lurking in the shadows will he ever get to live the life he's pretended to have for so long?

From best-selling author Mike Gayle, All the Lonely People is by turns a funny and moving meditation on love, race, old age and friendship that will not only charm and uplift, but also remind you of the power of ordinary people to make an extraordinary difference.

Be more Hubert. Be more Ashleigh.

Wonderful book. Engaging and loving story about a redemptive relationship between 2 unlikely protagonists, that explores the changing attitudes towards both racism, and extreme poverty. But as the title suggests, the key theme is loneliness and how we deal with it.

Brilliant.

A wonderful book full of ups and downs

What a book. I was hooked from the first page. It taught us about the real struggles and prejudice that people coming to England faced back in the 1950/60s. I know it happened but was not aware of how bad it really was. I loved all the diverse characters in the book. They were a fantastic team when it came to making a difference in their community. But Hubert was a special man. A man who suffered so much over the years who was a really true gentleman. I fell in love with Hubert and felt that I really knew him. The characters were all 'real' and believable. I am sad now I have finished the book. Well done Mike Gayle. Another excellent book!!

absolutely fantastic

I have been waiting patiently for this book to be released and I can honestly say I have not been disappointed. What appears to be a simple story has shocking twists that leave you open mouthed. I love Gayles books and have for 20 years but this is definitely his best book to date. I just hope I do not have to wait too long for his next master piece

Totally believable characters

I always love the characters in Mike Gayle’s books, there is something so real about them that you actually feel for their problems and dilemmas. The book seems straightforward to begin with, but there’s lots to think about further on.
Beautiful narration too. Really enjoyed it.

Superb narrator tops off a very special book

This is the best Mike Gayle yet, his latest novel is a real delight and so superbly read by Ben Onwukwe.
This is beautifully written, the story of a Jamaican man arriving in Britain full of hope in 1958 and the racism he faces. The story flits back and forth to his younger life and his life now as an elderly, lonely and abrasive widower. I don’t want to give too much of the plot away.
There are many interesting characters and storylines and this is an easy read that brings out your every emotion.
This story will be made into a film I’m sure and this book is a must read for everyone. The perfect listen for these lockdown days of 2020. Thanks Mike and Ben. Brilliant work.

Another great book from Mike Gayle

I absolutely loved this from start to finish and I have to say, the narration was one of the best I’ve ever heard. I found it hard to believe that it was only one narrator.
A wonderful story with lots of twists.

Fantastic and heartwarming story

I haven’t written a full review before and felt moved to do so by this book. A brilliantly written story, with such current themes and wonderfully narrated, I loved it. I didn’t want it to end but equally wanted to know where it ended up.

I haven’t read a Mike Gayle book for years and it was so nice to come across this recent one. It certainly left me with thoughts of how I could also make a difference.
