  • Summary

  • Organ donation is so common and regulated, it’s specified on your driver’s license. But what does it mean to leave your remains “to science” and medical research? Who gets the body? What really happens to it? In January of 2014, an FBI and Arizona Attorney General’s Office task force conducted a search and seizure raid on Biological Resource Center, a Phoenix body brokering business that recruited families to donate their loved ones’ bodies for use in scientific research. The task force discovered the stuff of nightmares. Employees with zero medical training were conducting dissections of human bodies with DIY grade electric saws. Twelve tons of severed torsos, heads, arms, legs, feet, hands, and spines were stacked and stuffed in huge freezers and marked for sale. Without prior approval, some of the parts were being sold to the Department of Defense. All the Gory Details takes a deep dive into the shocking world of body brokering, a wild west industry that allows a handful of entrepreneurs with questionable ethics to make millions, quite literally off the backs of others. But as the task force discovers, there are hardly any laws regulating this gruesome industry. Told firsthand by the investigators at the forefront of the case, the grieving family members who donated their loved ones’ bodies under false pretenses, experts in medicine and bioethics, and with previously unreleased interrogations of the body brokers, All the Gory Details uncovers why and how this little-known segment of the massive death industry has been allowed to operate for so long with so few rules and even fewer consequences.

the modern Resurrectionists and body snatchers

I loved the expose, next investigate the funeral parlors, who have been known to steal the bones out of cadavers and replace them with PVC pipe. The old cartoon Max Headroom has become reality. They did this same dirty business in 18th and 19th century England.

Not For The Faint Of Heart!

As warned, you might avoid this audio series if you are sensitive about certain things. However, I'm not, so I went ahead and found this truly fascinating. It will make you say "Wow" a lot. If anything, this will make you research before you donate the body of a loved one or yourself, to "science."

Creepy. Absolutely Creepy!!

This SEEMS criminal... but maybe not. Icky but maybe not illegal. This raises some great questions.

Fascinating and very, very disturbing

If you have morbid curiosities like myself, and like great reporting, storytelling, and bioethical quandaries, boy are you in for a treat!!

This was well done indeed.

terrible

Made it to about halfway through episode 3. First of all, the narrator sounds like he's from a corporate training video. Then, all it seems to be is stuff regarding how the company handles the bodies in a way where I guess we're supposed to be shocked and appalled? OMG- there's 40 freezers??! No duh, where all are they going to put the bodies- on the floor at room temp? OMG, there were body parts separate from the bodies??! Come on. Not sure if it will end up being that they did anything illegal, I'm not listening, but even so who cares?

extremely compelling

I found myself binge listening to this over two days. It is both horrifying and compelling. Having known someone who donated their body to science, I was horrified at what may have happened and informed to be more attentive to what I request be done with my or my husband's body after death. Also, the sociopathy of the body brokers was chilling, especially the intern who so easily joined in. A difficult but important listen.

Dug it

Heavy but interesting. The interview clips kept it from being too dry with only narration. Learned a lot about donation I didn’t know before.

I was Blown Away!

Having donated my father’s body to “medical science” in 2008 this now makes me wonder what really happened. I’m shocked and appalled at Stephen Gore’s profiting from the thousands of bodies he sold every year. The fact he never saw the inside of a prison is infuriating. The PTSD suffered is tragic and real, so sad!

very disturbing

It was an eye-opener. disgusted that this is a true story. But educated of what is expected of us to make changes how our bodies should be taken care of when you pass.

Extremely good

Terrifying and graphic, but SO good. Great examples, audio clips, visuals, which were all super graphic, but really well done. A topic we do not give nearly enough attention to and yet it is something everyone deals with after a loved one passes. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in gruesome stuff.
