Publisher's Summary

A HIT NETFLIX FILM, WINNER OF 7 BAFTAS AND NOMINATED FOR 9 OSCARS

The most famous anti-war novel ever written.

One by one the boys begin to fall...

In 1914 a room full of German schoolboys, fresh-faced and idealistic, are goaded by their schoolmaster to troop off to the 'glorious war'. With the fire and patriotism of youth they sign up. What follows is the moving story of a young 'unknown soldier' experiencing the horror and disillusionment of life in the trenches.

amazing telling of a beautifully chilling story

It's the same formula to many war stories, a kid headed off to war too young and slowly numbed by the horrors of the front, but somehow this is still so enthralling. It's the earnest voice and the internal battle of the protagonist, half depreciating the infectious camaraderie of war, the other half questioning why they would ever happen.

Amazing Story, If a Bit Rushed Narration-Wise

The story in itself is one to be absorbed and digested. However the narration seemed a bit blasé. Had the narrator took more time to slow down and reach and become Paul in the book, it would have been more engaging.

What took me so long to finally read this book?

I am disappointed in myself that I didn’t read this book until deep into my 40’s. Probably the best book I have read and wonderfully narrated. I feel I need to watch/rewatch all 3 versions of the movie, not having seen the original but the two more recent iterations a couple of times each.

Heartbreaking melancholic reflections on the beauty of life in war

A literary masterpiece written with such beauty and reflective depth. The narrator’s voice and emotive sensitivity brought the story off the page and offered a moral window to comprehend the horrors of war and the vitality of the human heart. Five stars.
