Publisher's Summary

At 21, Kathy Valentine was at the Whisky in Los Angeles when she met a guitarist from a fledgling band called the Go-Go's - and the band needed a bassist. The Go-Go's became the first multi-platinum-selling, all-female band to play instruments themselves, write their own songs, and have a number one album. Their debut, Beauty and the Beat, spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and featured the hit songs "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed". The record's success brought the pressures of a relentless workload and schedule culminating in a wild, hazy, substance-fueled tour that took the band from the club circuit to arenas, where fans, promoters, and crew were more than ready to keep the party going.

For Valentine, the band's success was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream - but it's only part of her story. All I Ever Wanted traces the path that took her from her childhood in Texas - where she all but raised herself - to the height of rock n' roll stardom, devastation after the collapse of the band that had come to define her, and the quest to regain her sense of self after its end. Valentine also speaks candidly about the lasting effects of parental betrayal, abortion, rape, and her struggles with drugs and alcohol - and the music that saved her every step of the way. Populated with vivid portraits of Valentine's interactions during the 1980s with musicians and actors from the Police and Rod Stewart to John Belushi and Rob Lowe, All I Ever Wanted is a deeply personal reflection on a life spent in music.

A rock n roll memoir like no other!

I love this audio book. Aside from being read by the author it comes with a soundtrack, written and performed by her as well. This adds a unique experience to this version of the book that is truly special. What a terrific idea to include a soundtrack. Not only do you get KV’s story as a Go-Go but my favorite chapters are those before and after the Go-Go’s—the band that she helped make famous. Those chapters tell of a life filled with struggles, disappointments, cheers and love. The arc of redemption at the end is not only satisfying but leaves you wanting more! I read the book before I listened to it, and each version gives new insights into a woman’s life that we’ve never experienced before. I’ve known Kathy for 25 years and much of what was in this book I did not know. It’s a fascinating read. I know you will enjoy it.

Enjoyable listen, with music interludes

Well written, easy to follow, but we seem shortchanged at the end. After AA rehab, we are rushed through an ending that includes Another break-up of the band, a dismissal, assorted adventures, a marriage and child rearing...a paragraph of words. Would read/listen to Part 2, which is given a short shrift

Memoiry

A basic story with interesting inside info on one the 80s most known bands. He author gets real toward then end but one senses a lingering lack of self awareness.

A true heroine

I have just finished this book I didn't realise how much talent Kathy Valentine had I saw the go go's with the police in 1981 at the Brandywine race track in Philadelphia. At the height of their career, they were fabulous, girls rocking out, and then I saw them About 15 years ago on the return Tour in Portsmouth Va, both shows were fabulous.I loved Cathy's book because she was honest. She showed her struggle through life to make something of herself And to not give up. I found her character to be a true heroin. We've all made mistakes, but a true heroine learns and builds from there. I wish this book came out when I was in high school (1979). It might way saved me from some of the foolish crap I did to myself. Thank you I really enjoyed your book. You were always my husband's favorite. And now I have a new respect for you. Your daughter must be very proud.🙂

Great book really liked

This book was great, more interesting than a lot of rock memoirs. Definitely worth it. She's very candid and raw. Really interesting life, she was meant to do music. It's got it all sex, drugs and rock n roll of course.

Go-Gos fan from the beginning

I thoroughly enjoyed this book/reading, especially after watching the HBO special earlier this year. In that special, the girls seemed to harbor a ton of resentment toward each other, so much so, that I wish I hadn’t seen it. Understandably, they are probably sick to death of rehashing the drama esp since that’s what the interviewers are going for.
This insight into Kathy’s life was really interesting and showed (1) the Go-Go’s weren’t the fluke they seemed to be on HBO (2) Kathy’s family and friendship dynamics were super interesting, crazy, sad, exciting and the way she navigated some of them were so interesting and showed a sense of humility & strength that is really beyond measure, especially for a rock star.
I’ve seen the Go-Go’s a handful of times, with and without Kathy, and I’ll just say the one without her was the worst concert I’ve ever been to. I found it completely unenjoyable.
Lastly, I’ll add how much better the stories are when the author reads them him/herself. It’s practically imperative.

Deftly crafted memoir and pitch perfect narration. Great blend humor and hard earned wisdom. Thank you, Kathy.
