About this listen

A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, beds down in a nondescript motel and immerses herself in a temporary reinvention that turns out to be the start of an entirely different journey.

Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic and domestic life of a 45-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectations while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive.

I am so glad this book exists! Its honesty is so refreshing I want to hug Miranda for having the guts to strip away all the layers we hide behind. An amazing book!

So honest and original

Someone recommended this book to me when we were talking about perimenopause and it’s exactly the book that I needed. It is rare for me to find any media that not only reflects how I feel in regard to my experiences of the world as a woman but also deeply mirrors my experiences and feelings as a queer woman. There were parts of this book that had me howling in grief, rage and recognition which was deeply cathartic but also the book is beautifully poetic and powerful in a way that feels true to some of my experiences of life (except for the fact that the middle aged character in this book has career success and money, neither of which I have, haha). This is a beautiful, honest and queer book and I am deeply grateful to have read it.

Beautiful and deeply relatable.

Whilst there were a number of quotes and series of dialogue about perimenopause and menopause that really struck me, this is a woman completely unhinged.

Fully whackadoodle

Miranda July has written something so moving and human and exceptional with All Fours that I feel a little bereft reaching the end.
As a woman of a similar age, it’s refreshing to read a tale about the midpoint of a woman’s life that is positive and uncertain yet hopeful.
I couldn’t put it down.

A profoundly different take on aging as a woman

It took me a chapter to get used to the author’s flat sounding voice, but surprisingly, I soon grew quite fond of it. Well worth a read.

Thought provoking - in a good way.
