About this listen

From critically acclaimed comedian Becky Lucas comes a funny, consoling, and very candid collection of stories and essays about friends, enemies, and figuring it out that establishes her as one of today's most original comedy writers.

There's no such thing as a perfect life, but there are perfectly hilarious moments. The best stories are often about the lowest points in our lives - the soul-crushing jobs, the bad boyfriends, the terrible holidays, the betrayals, and heartbreaks. These are the stories I tell people to make them like me, but, more importantly, they've helped me learn how to like myself.

So this book is a collection of thank-yous and acknowledgments:

  • Thank you to an ex-lover who marveled at the fact he could get hard with me, even though I wasn't up to his usual standard.
  • Thank you to the coked-up real estate agent who, while lecturing me and my friend about the importance of travelling, fell down a flight of stairs.
  • Thank you to the woman who approached me after a gig and told me she hoped her daughter wouldn't end up like me.

You've all taught me that you can't control who comes into your life or what happens to you, but you can decide just what it is you take from them.

Absolutely loved this autobiography. Lucas doesn't sugar coat and doesn't pull any punches, but her self-deprecating, honest wit wins the day, making every story a stand-alone gem (or should that be opal!).

Hilarious and poignant from beginning to end

Becky’s voice just adds to it. Some parts, for my own personal reasons brought tears to my eyes, yet even through some sad parts, the laughs keep coming. It’s honest , real and I appreciate it.

I love Becky Lucas generally but this book exceeded all my (already high) expectations, really funny but thought provoking with a few heartfelt moments. I love the format being in small, easy to consume chunks which makes for a great listen in the shower or while doing dishes.
Sad it’s finished, wish there was more because I really thoroughly enjoyed it!
Being narrated by the author makes it even better.

Really cool book

Loved every second of this. Laughed out loud throughout the entire book. Thanks for reminding me that we all have a little bit of opal in us.

A hilarious memoir

full of relatable stories capturing nostalgia, humour and sometimes dark humour, well put together and enjoyable at every turn. far from boring as it's a series of short stories. I really enjoyed the format of this book. it made me think of who I have to thank for the lessons taught to me... however cruel or nice.
I was sad when the book ended as I wanted more!

outstanding book
