Publisher's Summary

Confronting the past is never easy.

Cole Whitaker is happy. He has the job and boyfriend he always wanted. His heart's in no danger of being broken, and he can't ask for more from life. As a kindergarten teacher, he sees it all; however, one troublesome student has him reaching out to the parent, wanting to help. There's something about Savanah that tugs at his heartstrings.

He never expected her father.

Zander Brooks hasn't had an easy life, and he's made some mistakes. Freshly retired from the military and working as a firefighter, Zander thought he'd left Cole in the rearview mirror. He's not expecting him to appear in St. Petersburg, Florida, of all places, teaching his daughter's kindergarten class. Suddenly, his biggest mistake is being shoved in his face.

This is Zander's chance to close a door he'd never fully shut, but time with his former flame might change his mind.

Contains mature themes.

2.5 dull stars

First time for both Author and Narrator and it was a less than average experience. The story (well lack of one really) was flat and a mess. There were so many missed opportunities to elevate the storyline and character development. The narration was just ok for Cole but terrible for Zander.
Glad this was a freebie!

Enjoyably moody 2nd-chances / family-drama romance

On paper Cole Whitaker has everything he could want: a sweet and kind boyfriend, a career as a kindergarten teacher that he loves, and a place he can keep his beloved animals. When Savanah, a troubled new student exhibits anger and defiance issues, Cole requests a meeting with her parent. But Cole isn’t prepared for that parent to be Zander Brooks, his first boyfriend and the one who broke his heart. Zander’s unpredictable firefighter schedule leaves him little time to focus on the daughter he never knew he had until she was forced on him by her fed-up mother. Savanah isn’t the only one with issues and Zander has never processed why he rejected Cole and tried to live a straight life.

I quite liked this melancholy second-chances / family drama romance! Once bitten / twice shy, Cole fights hard to resist his old feelings for Zander, especially since he already has a boyfriend, but it’s Zander who has to work out his feelings and parenting and it takes him a while take responsibility for his actions. Despite Savanah’s manipulative nature, I felt for her and I cheered as she slowly settled and trusted those around her. I also enjoyed the audio narration by Braeden Sinclair, he performed all the characters extremely well!
