Publisher's Summary
New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni’s thrilling series continues as Seattle homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite is plunged into a case of family secrets and murder…
“Another outstanding novel from one of the best crime writers in the business.” --Associated Press
Called in to consult after a young woman disappears, Tracy Crosswhite has the uneasy feeling that this is no ordinary missing-persons case. When the body turns up in an abandoned well, Tracy’s suspicions are confirmed. Estranged from her family, the victim had balked at an arranged marriage and had planned to attend graduate school. But someone cut her dreams short.
Solving the mystery behind the murder isn’t Tracy’s only challenge. The detective is keeping a secret of her own: she’s pregnant. And now her biggest fear seems to be coming true when a new detective arrives to replace her. Meanwhile, Tracy’s colleague Vic Fazzio is about to take a fall after his investigation into the murder of a local community activist turns violent and leaves an invaluable witness dead.
Two careers are on the line. And when more deadly secrets emerge, jobs might not be the only things at risk.

An excellent read.
I can't recall a better read this year for this type of story. It was engaging right to the end. It would have rated 5 stars Overall but for the inevitable stupid act on behalf of our experienced officer. The story was going so well, I thought for once we would escape it, bit, alas no. It's a minor point. The book is worth a read.

Excellent character driven mystery!
A Steep Price is book #6 in the Tracy Crosswhite series. As with all of Dugoni's other books this can be read/listened to as a stand alone book. I would suggest listening to these books in the order they were written. There story is progressive and so are the relationships. There are a few storylines going on in this book. There's a missing Indian (not Native American) woman missing. She was going to medical school in defiance of her parents arranging a marriage for her. Then there is also a pregnant Tracy who is stressed about her job security when a Latino woman, Andrea Gonzalez is hired into her division. Meanwhile Vic Fazzio and Del Castigliano are working on a different case. An outspoken mother who is tired of the neighborhood crime and drugs is found murdered. When Fazzio gets sent out with Gonzalez there's a fatal shooting of a witness and it seems something funny is going on with the witness accounts of what happened. They don't match what actually happened and the blame is being on Fazzio. This is such a good book and a great addition to the series. My HIGHLEST RECOMMENDATIONS! Emily Sutton-Smith is one of the best female narrators in my opinion. She did a fantastic job as I would expect. If you found this review helpful please indicate so. Thank You.

love Tracy Crosswhite pre-sap marriage & pregnancy
why did her personality have to change to girly-girl? now she is so concerned about the nuances of office gossip and working after she has her kid, that she is not at all the same spunky character. the only saving grace is the police procedural storyline itself and the related sideline of issues (such as the relevance of pot. decriminalization, and how heavily monitor coppers are these days of social media and video recorders in every phone. However, I wish I could criminalize the mixture of police procedurals with harlequin-like (again SAPPY) romance novels! I hate romance novels and I like my police procedurals hard-boiled (a rarity theye days) ONLY please!

ok. not great
I've listened to all the novels in this series. The reader is very good first of all, just to get that out of the way. However the story line in this one, didn't have the same sense of tension, for lack of better words, than the other novels. I feel this is more about character development, which is o.k. but I missed the adventure of the detective story that was in the other books. That's not to state that there wasn't any crime story in this book, but it was mediocre at best in my opinion. Still worth listening too if you have been through the other books. You still want to know what happens with the characters, but I would like the author to get back to a more intense crime story in the future novels, if there are to be any.

Robert Dugoni and Emily Sutton-Smith - Fantastic
Robert Dugoni continues to hit all the right notes with the latest entry in the Tracy Crosswhite series, "A Steep Price". This around, the story delves into issues as varied as race, drugs, poverty, culture, education, pregnancy and workplace. Tracy and her partner, Kins, are called in to help investigate the disappearance of a young University of Washington student. When her body is found at the bottom of an abandoned well not far from her home, the initial ruling is suicide. But Tracy's not buying it and investigates it as a murder. Meanwhile, Faz and Del are assigned to the killing of a local mother and activist in a high crime neighborhood. Their investigation puts them at odds with both the community and the cartel that seems to run things. It also puts them into real danger. The author keeps everything fluid and moving and real, including Tracy's conundrum about when and how to announce her pregnancy. As usual, the writing is crisp and clear and realistic, right down to the park I pass almost every day on the way to work. Outstanding book I can't wait for more Emily Sutton-Smith one of my favorite narrators her delivery of the book just bring the story to life.

Series running out of steam?
I’ve enjoyed the series and have read most books by the author. The early books in the series were gripping but this is the weakest and the story line very predictable from early on. Narrator continues to perform well. I’ll likely pass on any future books in this series. It’s not terrible but became too sappy for my taste. I just was expecting more

Rushed and Incomplete
While I have enjoyed earlier entries in this series to varying degrees, this latest entry was of such a quality that I am going to return it. The narrator, Emily Sutton-Smith, did a fine job as usual, although her male Italian accents tend toward the comedic. However, the story is disjointed and poorly conceived. The initial murder is dismissed as an afterthought as if the author was so eager to get to plot contrivances that he forgot about the murder that prompted them. The intrigue of Detective Gonzalez telling a witness to blame Fazzio is washed away with the laughable idea that she is with a government agency and it was just a ruse to maintain her cover. Fazzio doesn't care that she risked his career. Tracy never gets a final meeting with her. She just disappears. Worse still, The culprits behind the murder that becomes the focus of the story (i.e., the one that Tracy investigates eventually) were so obvious that it required Tracy to look like a terrible detective for the last half of the book just to keep the story going. So, even though the two most obvious suspects were right in front of her face, Tracy pursues the least likely until they drag her back to the obvious ones. Though it is 9 times longer than The Academy, it managed to provide less narrative substance. Even more problematically, the cancer of Fazzio's wife, Vera, and Tracy's pregnancy are key subplots that are consistently hammered at throughout the story, building up Fazzio and Vera's fear of the treatment and the future as well as Tracy's doubt about her career. Yet, Vera's struggles with her treatments and the majority of Tracy's pregnancy and the birth are eliminated when the story jumps to an epilogue where Vera is recovering well and Tracy has had her baby but made no clear decision on her future. It's conceivably insulting to cancer survivors and women who have coped with pregnancy, but it's also insulting to readers who have had both storylines built up only to skip over the most meaningful portions of it for a generic happy ending. Random Observation: Every crime and every act of violence was committed by a non-white person as Dugoni repeatedly points out how frustratingly liberal Seattle cares more about criminals than cops. The murder of a black woman and the police shooting of a Latino suspect are scarcely resolved in the text so that we can focus more time on white people dealing with the aforementioned glossed over cancer and pregnancy Perhaps this was done unconsciously to balance out the focus on African-American victims in CLOSE TO HOME?

I do feel that the main characters are my friends, and I enjoy their different characteristics and their fears and joys. The story line was well handled and very interesting, I also like the fact that there are often two stories running simultaneously in Mr Dugoni's books. Another well satisfied reader here!
