Publisher's Summary

His scandals were right on track until she derailed everything.

As the successful owner of multiple railroad lines, Diana Barton is all too accustomed to fending off suitors seeking to stake their claim on her wealth. In order to keep the wolves at bay, Diana has contrived the perfect plan: appeal to the most notorious rake in London, the Baron Lord Bryant, to ruin her reputation and scare off the worst of the time wasters. The ruse will be no hardship - she’s secretly been fascinated by the man for years.

Lord Bryant is well aware of his questionable reputation. Indeed, he has cultivated the image carefully, and the last thing he wants is a wife. When he’s approached by the younger sister of a business associate, he tells her in no uncertain terms that he cannot help. However, when he sees for himself what she is up against, Bryant grudgingly offers his assistance. Faced with his most complicated entanglement yet, Bryant is firm in his conditions - and Diana knows that to get romantically involved with Bryant would spell certain heartbreak. But as the counterfeit couple grows ever closer, the line between truth and lies becomes blurred, threatening both Lord Bryant’s well-laid plans and the future of Diana’s railroad business.

A True Regency Romance

Clean, light, regency. This story is yummy! With well developed characters, witty dialogue, and light drama, makes this a GREAT read for relaxing, traveling, or the beach. I thoroughly enjoyed this author, and narrator. Highly recommend, especially if you like clean romances.

Loved it

I had heard so many good things about this book and it lived up to them. I was in an audiobook slump, so decided to try one I would probably like. I did!

Swoony hero who is a scoundrel, but not really. A heroine who is smart. While it has a more contemporary feel with a woman (GASP!) running a business, I think it’s a fantastic read. It’ll definitely be in my re-listen queue.

The narration was seamless and added to the story rather than detracted. She was not noticeable and that’s a compliment. I was able to just be drawn into the story and enjoy it.

Probably my favorite of the series

I have enjoyed all three of these books in the series. "A Proper Scoundrel" was probably my favorite. I really enjoyed a story about a woman running her own life and business in the era these are set. Fun and funny and great for summer reading.

I love love love this story!

Esther Hatch has written another compelling and enjoyable story. I so enjoyed that Lord Bryant finally got his story. I hope there will be more stories following some of the other characters from these "proper" series. And Noah Wall again does a fabulous job performing this book. I definitely recommend this one!

Charm, Humor, Sensitivity

There are many aspects of this story that I love. First, I love the humor...I just love a book that makes me laugh (and Esther Hatch along with Noah Wall as narrator of the audible edition shine at this). I love that we get to meet up with some of the characters from the earlier books in this series, again adding warmth and laughter to the overall experience of reading this book. I love just a little bit of mystery or intrigue which, again, Esther Hatch provides. Most of all I love when I can feel the depth of emotions from the various characters and, particularly, from the H/h of the story. Diana and Everton are complex and multi-faceted characters and the romantic tension just crackles from them. This was a lovely, fun, humorous, yet also sensitive and very romantic story, that makes me all the more certain that Esther Hatch is an author that will remain high on my list of favorites.

Not what you think, in a good way!

This story was a surprise, a really nice surprise. A different story in a genre I enjoy. I really like how this story portrays women. Despite popular belief. Women of the past were not scared rabbits who hated men. This character is intelligent, full of sass, and very kind. She has the self esteem every woman today should have but most do not. The male lead while he is the most handsome, doesn’t think he is an elite. Despite being treated that way. He looks inside himself wanting to find the character of a honorable, honest man. These two complement each other and show how men & women fit together and make each other stronger. Loved it!

A Regency worth its credit, maybe two!

I ping from genre to genre and back to my favorites. It’s been awhile since I have found a Regency romance worth the credit or the listening time.
Either it’s so fantastical a “problem” to even deal with reading, or a repeat (how many times must a young woman really have to dress as a boy?) etc., or the worst of all: the dialogue is awful and it’s mostly narrative of long internal musings. OR the new crop of “realistic” more gritty or sexy Regencies, few of which I enjoy.
This book was smoothly written and unfolded its characters and their secrets and story so well I loved the whole thing. The dialogue was charming and the growth of the relationship real enough to tug at my romantic heartstrings. I was so happy to stumble across it.
