Publisher's Summary

In the Peak District village of Scarsdale, 13-year-old girls didn’t just run away. So when Alison Carter vanished in the winter of '63, everyone knew it was a murder.

Catherine Heathcote remembers the case well - a child herself when Alison vanished. Now a journalist, she persuades DI George Bennett to speak of the hunt for Alison. But when a fresh lead emerges, Bennett tries to stop the story - plunging Catherine into a world of buried secrets and revelations.

By 'eck it were good

The author is a legend and this is more evidence of their greatness. The narrator has done a spectacular job of bringing the story to life ....and the story, well, I think you should give it a listen.

Val McDermid at her best!

As I read each book by Val, I become more enthralled within the stories she creates. This one was such a believable tale as you see how life would be inside such small villages made up of intertwined families.

A Place of Execution

Another wonderful book by Val McDermid enhanced by the narration of Paddy Glynn. This book has all the hallmarks of excellence we expect from Val McDermid but the twists and turns give no clue as to the bone shaking finale. Highly recommended and why isn’t it a movie????

Edge of Seat

Loved this book. It was exciting but smart and sensitively written. The narrator has a nice voice but was rather deadpan, and the first few seconds of narration of several chapters was cut off for some reason, but still this was a thrilling book and I'll look for more by this author.

What a twist!

The story appeared to be a bit slow to start off with but you feel invested in the characters and the unsolved disappearance of Alison Carter.
Brilliant story, brilliant writing, brilliant narration. Highly recommend to all readers who enjoy murder mysteries and crime novels. And a new Val McDermid fan.

'Nice'

Would you try another book written by Val McDermid or narrated by Paddy Glynn?

I would try another book by Val McDermid as the story jogged along quite well, although I had worked out the twist really early on. However, I found the narration a bit hurried.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

the story being set in 2 time frames was good, particularly as the earliest time frame brought back many memories of my youth. the least interesting was that the reveal was pretty obvious very early on.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration sounded to hurried.

Was A Place of Execution worth the listening time?

just about

enjoyed lots of it a bit & bits of it a lot!

'bear with the first 1/3 or so of this one..I found it slow & one-dimensional & uninteresting. After that though, McDermid gets into gear & things do become interesting! I'd recommend.

PS- from very early the 'whodunnit' in this story is obvious but that's ok - it's intriguing to sit back & listen to McDermid's plot.

Mindblowingly excellent!

Wasn't too sure I'd enjoy this, but boy was I mistaken. Quite possibly my best read for quite some time. The storyline has it all - suspense, intrigue, a lovely twist. It's a great story from McDermid.

You get a very vivid picture of life in the Peak District in the 50/60's, setting the scene for a distressing portrayal of every parents nightmare. The ensuing police investigation and court case is gripping.

Top notch stuff, and highly recommended.

Another great book from Val

Would you consider the audio edition of A Place of Execution to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the book but cannot fault my enjoyment of the audio reading. As with all of this author's books you are quickly gripped by the story and whisked away. The characters are well written and have great 'human' flaws. I would recommend to any reader of this genre as it is a cracking story and well worth trying a Val McDermid book.

Rather pedestrian

I'm not sure if it was the narrator, or the story itself, but this book just plods along. Every now and then you think something exciting is going to happen but somehow it doesn't. Given Val McDermid's reputation as a writer, I was expecting more, and have come away sadly disappointed. I also found the narration quite tedious.

Riveting

I rate this as Val McDermid's finest novel. I was gripped from start to finish and consumed it in two days. I felt I was witnessing the events as they happened. It's a great story made even better by the excellent narrator who gives characters different voices that makes them seem like real people.

Great first read !

Would you listen to A Place of Execution again? Why?

In the distant future I'd read it again.

What about Paddy Glynn’s performance did you like?

Very good narration, good voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It was a griping book, couldn't stop listening to it !

Any additional comments?

This is the first Val Mcdermid book I've bought, although I have seen all of the Tony Hill dramas on TV. It was an excellent story, I will be buying more of her books in the near future, can't wait to get another one !
